Click here January 2010 In This Issue Top 10 Raw Foods for Warmth Food & Sex Vibration Class Join Our Mailing List Top 10 Raw Foods to Keep you Warm for WinterThese Foods will Naturally Raise the Body's Temperature for the Colder MonthsDon't let anyone tell you that you can not do all raw or mostly raw for the winter months. All foods produce a certain effect on the body temperature, some cooling, some heating, and some neutral. Fried foods have an intense heating effect on the body which can have a false comfort effect while it is cold outside. Foods that are subjected to deep frying undergo such intense damage in a short amount of time. When these foods are eaten, your body has to generate the same intense heat in order to digest and assimilate it, hence the heating effect. Hence, most fruits and vegetables will have a cooling effect and are available more abundantly in the summer months to balance the summer heat. With eating primarily raw in the winter time, it becomes necessary to find the balance between fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains, etc as it needs to alter with the season. With icy cold conditions in the last few weeks throughout the US, the big question of the new year is what are the healthiest warming foods to indulge in during the next 3-4 months? Here are my Top 10!10. Cherries - All berries fall into the 10th position. Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries. Fruits on a whole, especially tropical fruits, cool the body. The berries listed are usually harvested in colder regions. Food that grows in colder regions will usually have a heating effect on the body and vice versa. It is therefore worth noting that tropical fruits should be limited during these next few months.9. Cashews - Cashew kernels and all nuts hold the 9th position. Some other examples are pine nuts, almonds, coconut meat, walnuts, and pecans. Nuts are predominantly oil or fat. Healthy fats are absolutely essential in any environment but especially colder environments where nuts will help thicken the blood, hence creating a warming effect.8. Dates - Dates, like nuts, will also help thicken the blood. The principle difference from nuts is that dates are sugar. Raisins, bananas, plantain and other starchy or dried fruit will apply here. If you have teeth issues, eating dates alone may not be advisable, however, using dates in recipes calling for a sweetener, or with tahini seed butter is excellent combination.7. Mustard Greens - Mustard greens and all other leafy green vegetables, especially Kale, are staples year round, but extremely critical in the winter months. The primary nutrient missed in the winter time is Vitamin D which allows for minerals, like calcium, to be properly assimilated. Kale, collards, mustard greens, spinach, etc are rich in the most important minerals that the body needs during the winter months.6. Goji (Lycii) Berry - Goji berries or wolf berries have been used in Tradition (TCM) for centuries. Goji berries exploded on the raw food scene in the last decade. Under the science of TCM goji's are considered a cooling food. However, given the rich red pigment (fire) of these berries, and the nature of the healing effects for men with impotence, this is definitely a fire warming food. Because they are dried, I like to soak goji's for 4-6 hours, strain off fresh goji juice and mixed the reconstituted goji's with other fresh berries such as blueberries and raspberries (other heating foods :-)).5. Ginger - One of my favorite foods on this list as fresh ginger can be grated for use in savory dishes (e.g. ginger kale) or can complement a fresh green juice, sugar cane juice, or lemonade (yum). Heat up your nutmeats, juices, and salad dressings with fresh grated or juiced ginger. Never ever use dried powder ginger.4. Onions - Red onions, yellow onions, white onions, and green scallions are represented here at #4. My top preference is red onions as red onions carry the most heat and potentially have the most healing power. Scallions are a great alternative to any dish calling for onions, without the strong pugent order. Again, never use dried onion powder.3. Garlic - Nature's #1 natural antibiotic. Fresh garlic's use a medicine is matched by the flavor it can provide to a recipe. I attribute garlic's diversity to the heating ability it has as a food in general. Heat provides movement and most disease is due to stagnancy. Shallots, leeks, chives, as well as onions (#4) are all close relatives to garlic due to the mustard heating oil present in all of these foods. As a culinary chef I suggest using them all interchangeably to switch up the vibrations of your recipes. It's always worth re-mentioning, fresh is best, garlic in a powdered form doesn't have the medicinal abilities or flavor.2. Peppers - Cayenne, Chile, Jalapeno, Habenero, Scotch Bonnet, you name it, and it brings the fire. As a raw chef, hot peppers are a primary component for achieving satisfactory mojo flavor for my dishes. Never ever am I using dried up powders like Cayenne pepper. When food is broken down from its fresh state and dried and ground down into a powder, the essence is gone, and that essence will be sorely absent from your dishes. Even if you are adverse to hot spicy foods, the healing effects of using fresh peppers in your dishes will prove beneficial, especially if you have blood circulation issues.1. Ginseng - Ginseng holds the top stop. Not thought of as food per say but it is a true superfood. There are strains of Ginseng that has sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is a logical reason for this. Ginseng, being the root that it is, is not your ordinary carrot. Ginseng has been a healing food used by ancient civilisations for centuries. If there is any food that has the fountain of youth, it is Ginseng. Ginseng comes in different varieties like most foods, the hottest variety being Korean red ginseng. Other varieties such as American Ginseng and Chinese Ginseng are not as heating as the Korean variety and can be eaten during the warmer months of the year to maintain body/weather balance. The roots should be hard and thick and chewed on as a snack on a daily basis for best results. The disclaimer is to limit your intake if taking on a daily basis as too much can be drying and have an adverse effect on the kidneys. Fresh Ginseng can be found in Asian markets and makes a great snack. Peruvian Ginseng, also known as Maca, is another form that is usually sold as a powder. It has an excellent taste and compliments nut milks and smoothies. Please email comments & questions to khepra.
