Growing Food In a Small Apartment

I'm living in DC and I would like to grow more of my food at home. So

far, I'm growing wheat grass and sprouting, but I strive to be more

sustainable.

My two windows in the living room and single window in the bathroom

face another building, but it gets an ample amount of light, I'm just

not sure about how much direct sunlight.

Does anyone have experience growing food in such an environment?

Collette,

Have you ever tried the Aerogardens? They are a bit pricey, but I am

able to grow basil, mint, cilantro, dill, chives, parsley, cherry

tomatoes, chili peppers, romaine lettuce, and a whole host of other

veggies indoors. My condo is small, and all of the windows are

facing the west, with not much sunlight.

The aerogardens provide light and circulate water through the seed

pods. You can buy seed kits from Aerogrow or supply your own. I've

been able to find aerogardens at a discount at the stores that are

going out of business like Linens N' Things. I have about 5 of them.

It's a great option for city dwellers with no land. Again, the only

down side is the initial cost, but I've had mine for 2 years now and

have had some great results.
