Guest guest
Hi everyone, I would like to invite others to join me next Monday Sept.24 in doing Gabriel Cousens' Phase 1 diet. There are 5 in the group so far. We will share e-mails and telephone numbers (optional) as a support network for recipes and ideas. Phase 1 is a very cleansing raw vegan way of eating that eliminates sweet fruit and salty sauces as well as anything too spicy or sugary. Mr. Cousens is the creator of Tee of Life Rejuvenation Center in Arizona. He devised this way of eating to totally cleanse and heal the body/mind/spirit. (There are follow up phases which include more variety while keeping the body in perfect balance.) The Problem: The standard American diet slowly and persistently creates a toxic situation in the body whereby refined sugars, animal products, refined grains, preservatives, chemicals, moulds, fungus, and acid take over the entire system. The body actually begins the process of composting which means that it is preparing to go back into the earth. All kinds of disease and sickness can be brought about by this condition. These are known as the diseases of the rich and wealthy who eat too many rich, salty, sweet, and acidic foods. Heart disease and diabetes are both caused by the food we eat. Other cultures who live simpler plant based lifestyles, do not die of these diseases. Even Americans before 1920's did not die of these diseases because the diet was a simple one based on plants, not on excessive animal products and processed foods. The colon, the cells, the mind, and the spirit are all linked together as they try to respond to this persistent assault of the standard American diet. The way to push the " restart " button and stop the composting process is to eliminate certain foods and focus the mind and spirit on health again. So says Gabriel Cousens... A Solution: The phase 1 plan is known to reverse diabetes, eliminate the existence of heart disease, and allow a person to give up cravings for drugs, alcohol, nicotine and the like. More importantly, this way of eating creates an inner terrain of total health and eliminates the pre-conditions of all disease or imbalance. For instance, it rids the body of fungus and candida which is the precondition for cancer, balances the blood (diabetes), brings balance to the colon (where most of the immune system is located), and it relieves congestion in all systems; mucous, atreries (heart disease), veins, nerves, lungs, kidney, liver, and lymph. The success of the plan depends on each individual's desire to cleanse and rejuvenate. The process cannot work unless you are 100 percent committed. It's a great comfort knowing others are doing it too. (To learn more about phase 1, look for Gabriel Cousen's book, Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine. It's at Health Concern in Towson, and available online from Natural Zing. You may be able to find it at Breathe Books in Hampden, or they can order it quickly for you) Individual Considerations: If you have been eating really well or at least 80 percent raw, you may only need a month or so to kickstart the body into health again. Most people however, need the full 90 days of this way of eating to completely heal. After phase 1, there is a modified transition diet called phase 1.5 that will keep you in the same level of health with more choices. Then there are other possibilities as you progress. Ayurvedic Considerations: Gabriel Cousens also outlines how different doshas or ayurvedic types have certain needs that are important to understand. Each type has some things to avoid as well. A vata type which is a thinner body type with a high metabolism and cooler body temperature should avoid cold foods and ice water. They should also blend or cut vegetables whenever possible into small pieces and chew their food thoroughly. They can eat more avocado and raw oils and do well with sea vegetables and some spice. A pitta type, which is a hotter body type and medium build, must eat more neutral flavors and a bit less fat in general. They have strong digestion, but their balance can be thrown off by too much of any strong flavor or spice. They need blander cooling foods. They should avoid warming foods like spices and stimulating foods like ginger. A kapha body type which is a larger body with slow steady digestion that gains weight easily. They should snack less, drink less water and eat some warmer foods like some spice or slightly heated but not cooked. They also do well by eating a lot of greens, as do all the doshas. Gabriel Cousens goes into this in more detail. I strongly recommend his book. It is succinct and covers a lot of ground. Raw Vegan Lifestyle: Eating raw vegan is a totally different way of looking at food. It is important to understand which foods are fatty, sugary, salty, protein rich, acidic, high in calcium and so on. It is important to include a lot of variety and look for foods that work with your body type. It is a very individualized way of eating and only you can know what works for you. For instance, each family member may have different needs. A spicy avocado & tomato salad may work for you, but not for your spouse or child. Keep this in mind. Cousens has done a lot of research to give us a guideline, but each individual must find out what's best for them by going through the process of discovery. All the best, ~Michael
