Ginger Gold Apples / Local Apple Varieties

Greetings all,

I have recieved lots of questions about different

apple varieties especially the Ginger Gold apples that

were suppose to be in this weeks box but will be in

nexts weeks box. So I decided to put some information

together about different local apple varieties.

 

Over the next 2 months there will be over 21 varities

of apples grown in maryland alone. If you incude the

states of PA into the mountains of NC there will be

over 32 varieties grown (some are late and early crops

with slightly different taste of a more commonly know

apple-like fuji's)

 

So here's a list to give you all a little more info (

it's a list from many places and does list if the

apple is a good raw eating or cooking- I'm just the

messenger):

OH and this a Maryland list doesn't include the Va,

PA, or NC crop

 

Ginger Gold is sweet, slightly tart, juicy and has a

firm composition. It serves great fresh, in salads,

pies, as sauce and baked. Availability is August.

 

Gala is sweet with a crisp yellow flesh. It serves

great fresh and in salads. Availability is August.

 

McIntosh is slightly tart, crisp and very juicy. It

serves great fresh and as a sauce. Availability is

September

 

Cortland is slightly tart with a crisp very white

flesh. It serves great fresh, in salads, pies, as

sauce and baked. Availability is September.

 

Jonathan is tart, juicy and has a crisp composition.

It serves great fresh and as a sauce. Availability is

September

 

Empire is more sweet than tart and has an extra crisp

composition. It serves great fresh, in salads and as a

sauce. Availability is September

 

Jona Gold is a blend of tart Jonathan and sweet

Golden. It serves great fresh, in pies and baked.

Availability is September.

 

Idared is slightly tart and juicy. It serves great

fresh, in salads, pies, as sauce and baked.

Availability is September.

 

Mutsu is sweet, slightly tart, juicy, very firm and

crisp in composition. It serves great fresh, in pies

and baked. Availability is October.

 

York is slightly tart, juicy, and has a crisp firm

composition. It serves great fresh, in salads, pies,

as sauce and baked. Availability is October.

 

Stayman/Winesap is sweet, slightly tart, juicy and has

a firm composition. It serves great fresh, in salads,

pies, as sauce and baked. Availability is October.

 

Fuji is very sweet, juicy and has a crisp firm

composition. It serves great fresh, in salads, pies,

as sauce and baked. Availability is October.

 

Braeburn is sweet, tart, juicy and has a crisp firm

composition. It serves great fresh, in salads, pies,

as sauce and baked. Availability is October

 

Granny Smith is tart, juicy and has a crisp

composition. It serves great fresh, in salads, pies,

as sauce and baked. Availability is October

 

Honeycrisp's skin is a distinctive mottled red over a

yellow background, with coarse flesh. Harvested

beginning in September,

 

Newtown Pipin a processing variety, most U.S. supplies

are used commercially, but is a softer apple variety.

Mostly available in October

 

Holliday- Crisp, tart but sweet all purpose apple.

When you can find them they are available in beginig

of October

 

Nittany is a firm crips sweet apple, it is a mid

season variety of the York Apple. Avail in mid October

 

Golden Supreme is a early variety of the Golden

Delicious seen in early september.

 

Pink Lady has a unique sweet-tart flavor described as

" Gala with a zing! " Pink Lady is great for snacking,

slicing or dicing on a salad, and for baking. October

 

Rome Beauty is mildly tart apple is primarily used for

cooking and is especially good baked or sautéed. The

Rome apple is typically available beginning in

September.

 

We will try to have all varieties of these apples for

the co-op during the season. So any other questions.
