Here is a recipe that just came in an email from Rawfood news magazine. I'm looking this over saying to myself, what IS our definition of raw?

OK, the strawberries work for me

But then there is oil - last I checked that's a pretty processed and refined item

don't know about the nibs, but sound like their a whole food but I don't know if you can eat them just as is?

agave nectar, again, I believe it is a bit processed, but not totally sure,

and salt, well, I'm not big on eating that, rather get the sodium in my food source.

 

In my book raw food = whole food made in nature unprocessed in any way that you can eat as is...

I guess we all take steps to get to that place, but I wouldn't call this recipe a raw one.

Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries

(Makes 22 small ones or about 11 large ones)

22 small or 11 large organic fresh strawberries (please make sure they're organic, because non-organic ones are loaded with toxins!)

3 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil

2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs, ground into powder

4 teaspoons raw agave nectar

Pinch of Celtic sea salt

IMHO, the chocolate-dipped strawberry recipe is certifiably raw, though far from ideal, especially from a hygienic standpoint, though this is probably self-evident. If I were to prepare it myself, I would probably omit the sea salt, even if this is higher quality than table salt, since it doesn't affect the flavor. David Wolfe & Shazzie's book, "Raw Chocolate," discusses synergy between raw cacao and various other food-grade products occurring in nature. Celtic sea salt is particularly emphasized as sweet foods are well-complemented by mildly salty substances. This is why I routinely eat celery after or in between eating juicy or sweet fruits at home for breakfast & lunch. Celery is known to be high in organic sodium which offsets sugar & reduces a food's glycemic index as a direct result. Celtic sea salt, OTOH, has inorganic sodium since it doesn't occur naturally within a whole food. Thus our body rejects it as a foreign substance and our white blood cell counts rise when we induce such isolated sodium sources. I can't imagine using celery in a chocolate recipe but it would obviously help to eat it after such a delicious dessert. I've also noticed that organic chocolate bars are reasonably priced compared to the few available online & rarely in health food stores (as truffles from Freeland Foods) that happen to be labeled "raw." The latter are generally between $5-10 for a bar that only weighs 1.3 to 2 oz. The most egregious example of this price structure has to be NFL's Sacred Heart chocolates at $10 for a bar that barely weighs 2 oz. If we were to find a company or health food store in the U.S. that was willing to become the domestic wholesaler for Shazzie's Naked Chocolate, available in 6 amazing flavors with incredible superfoods, then perhaps they'd be more reasonably priced than they are now. To satisfy your curiosity, you should check them out at www.detoxyourworld.com. As far as I know, they are presently available exclusively from that company in the U.K. The shipping is extraordinarily costly, even after their 12 bars for the price of 11 deal, so you'd have to live in Europe to really benefit from their deal. Maybe we can collectively persuade one or more U.S. companies to become a wholesaler for them. I've already emailed Natural Zing many months ago, but never received a reply, and also emailed Dagoba many moons ago, but heard no reply, except for a false claim that raw cacao can't be legally imported into the U.S. without fumigation. I spoke to Hillary at Roots Market and I'm left wondering if they'll ever sell them there after I was told they would actually bring them into the store. Anyone who enjoys raw chocolate would relish the chance to eat Shazzie's Naked Chocolate guaranteed.

I wonder about the definition of raw too.

 

Your definition would have made it simple, easily distinguishable and good.

 

The word raw attracts certain people to a product so it is used to make a product more acceptable to this segment of the population. You may have noticed that a product with the word raw can be a lot more expensive and the marketers seemingly more proud of it than a product that does not have this word on it.

 

 

Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell?
