Reflections on fundraising and community support: What is my contribution to

the raw community?

Another class, another dinner, another speaker…Listen, I’ve been raw for

AWHILE now, I’ve been to my share of raw retreats, festivals, classes and

dinners, and I’ve learned quite a bit to keep me going on the path...Sometimes

I’m tired of talking about food, food, food - raw or otherwise. Sure, it’d be

nice to participate in all the events, but they cost money and, well, I can make

gourmet raw food myself at home. So how can I justify the expense? And even if I

could really use some new information and support, I don’t know if I can afford

it this time…

Sometimes it’s easy to lose track of the big picture. Raw is about changing

ourselves, yes. But Raw is more than that: It’s about health, caring and

support: Caring for ourselves, our family, our friends, and our planet. Raw is

about community and knowledge, and spreading the amazing word! It’s wonderful

that we make a difference just by eating fresh, vegetarian, organic foods –

supporting local farmers, living creatures, and the environment, so we’re

already doing enough, right?

Actually, it’s not all that we can do. To effect change on a larger scale we

need to be willing to support the greater cause. Just as we understand that

eating organic is not too expensive taking into account all the health benefits

of organic, as well as the detriments to our health and to the environment

associated with toxins used in conventional agriculture, so too we can

understand that the upcoming fundraising event is not just about another gourmet

dinner. Forget about the fact that it is not only a gourmet raw food meal, but

also a chance to hear the latest from two of the most prominent long-time raw

foodists in the country, in a fancy club in the tallest building in this

beautiful city, with live music and entertainment, and an auction full of

wonderful items we might want and use anyway, with a wonderful group of old

friends and new people to meet…

This is truly about supporting the vision: of a raw community center, a place

to gather, the mission of an organization working to lead the way and reach the

public, about supporting the existing community and inspiring and educating

those new to the lifestyle. This is about growth, expansion, abundance, sharing,

and gratitude. We can’t want change, but be unwilling to break out of our own

comfort zone, unwilling to give, participate, support, to contribute in any way

that we are able: time, money, resources…

What I’m trying to say is this – at first even I wasn’t sure whether I would

go to the Raw Washington fundraiser or not…it seemed too expensive. Now I

wouldn’t ever consider not going! We talk, talk, talk – but I think that it’s

time to act! An attitude of abundance will come back to us all…and I hope to see

ALL OF YOU in the raw community there on January 13th in support of this

monumental contribution that Monika is making for the good of the entire raw

community!

With Love and Abundance,

Asya
