Over the years, I've helped educate a couple doctors on the issue of

low white blood count for vegetarians. My current ND (Bruce Milliman)

seems fascinated by my diet and its affect on my health and test

results. If I didn't see a physician, we wouldn't break down any

barriers to more people getting healthy. A lot of people trust their

doctors to give them nutrition advice and preventive medical advice. If

the doctors don't experience " abnormalities " like us, then they may

never have to expand their thinking. The more we walk them through it,

the more the tides will turn. It's true, there may be some

circumstances where it could pose a threat. We just need to make sure

we are in control of those situations. The times we are not in control

is at times of accidents/injuries. That's where the medic alert

bracelets or cards come in.

One final thought on giving blood. It is a generous thing. In the past

I have given over a gallon of blood. (A third world visit prevented me

from donating for 3 years.) My thought now is maximizing my health and

making things easier for my body. Removing blood from the body, that

needs replacing, causes an additional burden on the body, needing

additional nutrition, etc. Giving blood is still a generous gift and a

person receiving a vegan raw foodist's blood will be receiving a

special gift indeed! If I were as passionate about giving blood as I

was many years ago, I would do it. I would just go armed with

information if the questions come up. The one test I recall them doing

on the spot (back then) was for iron. They prick the finger and see if

your blood sinks in a solution. I don't know what tests they run these

days (before and after.)

It may be worth a call to the blood bank and ask questions and explain

your concerns.
