Guest guest
Not to start another argument with Robert, or to encourage his lenghty posts, but I absolutely disagree that for most people a 100% raw vegan, mostly fuit diet provides sufficient B-12! I even heard recently that 80% fruit diet promoting, natural hygiene guru Doug Graham admitted to taking b-12 injections. I believe that frugivorous humans need to eat small amounts of animal products or require supplementation. Just because today's fruit doesn't provide nutrients doesn't mean that we don't need those nutrients to be healthy--based on the same false assumption that a diet of mainly fruit promotes optimal health! Guest guest
I tend to agree with you Chef. I notice that in Roberts lenghty response, he included what we call in mathmatics a " fudge factor " (no not a sweet treat for late night geeks) by defining frugivorous as including " even smaller amounts of bugs and animal flesh/products, if any and only sense (eg, taste, smell, touch) directed. " There comes your B12. Since my eating is " sense directed " (as contrasted with what? Ideology?) it includes flesh foods, albeit infrequently. Now what the 100% raw vegan does, I have no idea. I'd prefer to eat in a way in which supplements don't become a requirement, else I would have the feeling that I wasn't eating what my body needed. There just aren't any good sources of B12 in plants and what is made in the intestines by bacteria is not absorbed. http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html OTOH, I don't know how rampant this deficiency is in the long term vegan commuinty, so I dont know if it really a big issue for most people.
