And now... back to the news...

It may not be in the NorthWest, but it's good to see more raw

restaurants opening up. With a THIRD Cafe Gratitude opening up, they

must be doing well. Has anyone on the list eaten at one of them

(probably Shakti?)

Cafe Gratitude. 1730 Shattuck Ave. (at Virginia), Berkeley.

415-824-4652, Ext. 3; www.withthecurrent.com. Matthew and Terces

Engelhart's third new-age-tinged Cafe Gratitude (the first two are in

San Francisco) has found an adoring audience in Berkeley. The food is

vegan, and almost all of it is raw -- nothing has been heated to more

than about 120 degrees, so that nutrients and certain amino acids

aren't destroyed. The dehydrated sunflower seed and buckwheat crusts

for the so-called pizzas (open-face crackers heaped with veggies,

sprouts and cashew-milk " ricotta " ) are surprisingly delicate and tasty,

though dishes such as the mulchlike kale and seaweed salad reinforce

health food's rusky stereotype. Wine, beer and an extensive juice bar.

Lunch daily. $$. -- J. Birdsall. (21/2 forks on 3/23/06)

Hi Jeff,

I have enjoyed dining at Cafe Gratitude at their first location. Wonderful,

affirming business model and very good food. Have a look at their web site.

Everyone I send there raves about their experience.

Warmly, Dorothy
