Hi Sheree,

I've been eating prickly pears my whole life so am happy to answer this

question. First, always hold the pear by the two ends, your index finger on

one end and your thumb in the other, using newspaper is even better so as

not to get pricked. You can slice it lenghthwise with just a very shallow

cut and then peel the entire skin off the fruit. Then chew softly (don't

bite down hard) and swallow the seeds. I've rarely been able to find ripe

prickly pear up in the NW. If you ever go to mexico do load up on all the

varieties you can find (not sure how many there are) as they are almost

always perfectly ripe and sweeter than you'll ever get up here. The red

prickly pear seems to have more flavor than the green. If you want to add

prickly pear juice to a dish simply blend the fruit on a very low setting

(just to liquify but not to break up the seeds), then strain through a

cheesecloth or nutbag - this is also a good method for blackberries. Enjoy!

How do you eat a prickly pear?

I wasn't prepared for a mouthful of seeds (hard as rock seeds!). Please

advise. Thanks.
