Guest guest
I'm so glad this has come up for a topic of discussion. I don't think you are paranoid Janaki. I have been feeling in my gut for sometime the need to start preparing myself for a emergency situation. So I too have begun to prepare an emergency hiking pack. I went to REI and bought MiniWorks EX (MSR Brand) water filter. Costs about 80.00 and it can filter 500 gallons of water, and the filter is ceramic one that can be cleaned over and over and can last years according to the chart. The salesperson at REI said that volunteers that went to help the survivors of Hurricane Katrina took this particular one filters with them. He also recommended buying large tarps for makeshift shelter. Anyhow you mentioned selling your bicycle and getting a Mtn. bike. I don't know much about bikes, but I currently have a trek hybrid 700. It has rather slimmer tires but some good tread. What is your thoughts in getting a mountain bike instead? Also I am interested in finding out more about what people are doing. Shari mentioned fasting, could you explain a bit more about that? If anyone can refer me to a online group or website that would have more information that would be appreciated. thanks! Guest guest
I'm glad this has come up also. Some things I have learned from the news. 1) In a disaster emergency we should be prepared to take care of ourselves for at least 3 days, if not 7. 2) If you are relying on someone else to feed you, you will probably get MREs from the military. Most of these would not be vegan and certainly not raw. 3) If an evacuation is called for, it will be the traffic from hell--traffic is bad enough during rush hour as it is, imagine everyone trying to get out of the area at the same time!
