Guest guest
Does anyone have a source on the study or studies that showed Teflon to create cancer? I would like to know the circumstances in which the Teflon was used in the testing. It would help me with my decisions and recommendations. Was it variable controlled in terms of the the temperature the item containing Teflon was heated to? And was it then food used served out of that container such as a cooking pan that then created the cancer? Or was it large amounts of Teflon directly inserted into a lab animal, or was the animal fed Teflon in the food? And in what kind of quantities? Plastic has been found to be toxic as well, right? And cancer producing, soft being the worst especially when exposed to heat. Soft plastics have been used for food and water, and now everybody is moving to the hard plastic or glass for water containers. Many of us use the soft plastic meshes in our dehydrators, so which would be less bad, plastic or teflon? Since we are only heating minimally in a dehydrator is there enouph off gassing or transference of particles to make an effect? When I remove teflex from a tray of crackers or gardenburgers or cookies or food bars or anything, I am always in a hurry to get my food to dry to finish, and when the top is dry, I turn the tray over onto another tray with the mesh, remove the now on top tray, and pull off the teflex sheet. A thin layer of whatever food it was always sticks to the teflex which I wash down the drain when I clean my Teflex sheets. So how much teflon would then be on the food? Let's all keep sharing everything we know when we find out about good and bad things, but let's please try to refer to the sources, which are much more useful for making decisions, than is making people crazy afraid of everything they use and do, which can lead to unwanted attitudes of " giving up " , " it doesn't matter what I do, everything is toxic " , and so on. Let me also mention as a friendly reminder suggestion to rawseattle group members for us to please not be so inclined to send non informational one line responses that fill up email box space. I love my rawseattleemailgroup connection and I get overwhelmed with too many emails many of which are not very necessary, I pray to those who do this to have compassion and ask you to please take the extra effort to email private friendly responses like that to the individuals involved, albeit, many single line responses are informative as well, and I don't mean those ones. Namaste good people trying to make a difference, Janaki Rose
Guest guest
I just received this from Gideo Graff: RE: TEFLON CAN GIVE YOU CANCER Wed, 13 Jul 2005 10:40:51 -0700 I will be forwarding you the MSDS (material safety data) Sheet along with information about our Teflex- off gassing occurs 720 degrees- so you do not have a problem what so ever! When the Teflex is made they are actually heat it up in the layering process past 700 degrees so that all the off gassing has occurred and nothing is left - it is totally safe for foods. The problems with the spray-on Teflon coatings [on pots and pans] is that they are sprayed on and do not go through the same heating and layering process. Then people abuse their pans- like leaving them on the stove with nothing is in them or heating up oil- which goes well over 700 degrees then they have the off gassing problems. Bottom Line Teflex sheets are safe for foods and they have already had all the potential harmful components removed or (off gasses) during the layering process. Even if that was not done you will NEVER get to 720 degrees in a dehydrator. Thank you so much for asking the question, so many times people hear something like this and do not get all the information!- have a great day! Guest guest
According to an MSNBC article, it is Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) used in making the teflon that the EPA found could potentially cause cancer based on animal studies. I found some information on PFOA at the EPA web site: http://www.epa.gov/opptintr/pfoa/pfoainfo.htm There is more detailed information and contact information here: http://www.epa.gov/opptintr/pfoa/pfoafr.htm I hope that helps.
