Ritual revolves around thorny theme

Alor Star: Fancy juggling a durian?

Fifteen men did just that at the Kim Eng Temple in Flat Taman Setia

Jaya here recently.

The men, in a trance, also executed karate chops on the thorny King

of Fruits and cracked them open with their heads.

Temple owner Ho Theang Swee, 50, said the ritual was observed once

every five years in conjunction with the anniversary celebrations of

the deity, Teow Su Kong.

" The participants must also observe a strict vegetarian diet for 49

days before they undertake the task, " he said, adding that the stunts

using durian was incorporated into the anniversary celebrations for

the first time five years ago.

Ho said that besides minor cuts, the participants suffered no other injuries.
