Guest guest
Hugh Grant Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer Monsanto Company 800 North Lindbergh Boulevard St. Louis, MO-63167 (314) 694-1000 Dear Mr. Grant: You know, the American public is not as dull minded and naive as you believe. Monsanto has a horrible and well deserved reputation as caring only about profit. No matter now you spin the talk, and play with your money, lawyers and lobbyists, folks are realizing what cads you really are. So tell me, do you personally have " profits over people " tattooed on your forehead, or are you just very good at hiding behind corporate policy and stifling your conscience? Monsanto Company's actions against farmers both here and abroad has given the term " Ugly Americans " New life. Gee thanks. I am sure your drive to capture the dollar here and overseas has done major harm, not only to peoples lives, but to biological diversity of crops and freedom as well. You use intimidation, lawsuits and defamation to gain your results. How do you sleep at night? Your words of honesty, integrity, and decency are laughable. Monsanto's Genetically Engineered crops. Where do I begin. I realize that I am wasting my time as you and your company have made it abundantly clear that the bottom dollar is all you care about... The deaths of countless Indian farmers who kill themselves with the round-up pesticide needed for their seed crops bought from you is reprehensible. It is done as a result of the mounting debt they occur using your terminator and round-up ready GM seeds. And you are far from truthful in the amount of research done in the generational mutations that are already arising in the GM crops not only here but worldwide. Humans have the right to produce their own seed from their own crops. We also have the right to promote and preserve genetic diversity by selectively breeding corn, canola, soybeans, and other crops without your interference. This includes not only not having to settle out of court or face big battles with you over your much vaunted " rights " but also it pertains to you flooding Mexico and other countries with cheap GM corn. You know, maybe you are just ignorant. Let me bring up a fact that you are not looking at. During the blight that caused the Potato Famine, Ireland was producing over a dozen types of potato. Millions starved to death. The blight was everywhere. Peru was also hit by the same blight. But there since farmers had privately developed over 5,000 types of potatoes, the damage to lives and the country was minimal. We produce only 4 types of potato here in the U.S.A. Are you smart enough to see the danger of what you are promoting? We are already facing a similar situation with bananas (which has happened more then once with them, they are very sensitive to this sort of thing.) If a crop is hit hard and a resulting blight wipes out a GM crop that you developed and pushed on the market, (underselling the locally bred diverse crop) for the region as you have done in Latin countries... the resulting bad publicity would make your company name a household curse word. Now before you start rumbling about how your GM crops will prevent that scenario, may I point out that your GM crops do terrible in drought? The seeds you are replacing, many of which are being lost to us as a result of your actions, were bred for those locales, with the farmers decades of understanding of his fields and needs. There is no way that a handful of GM crops can cover every variation of terrain and weather. You are setting us up for terrible environmental repercussions that will plague us for years. Hmmm... your company has a history of doing that, don't they. What grows in the abundant watered flats, will not do as well on the colder hillsides. But you and your companies pursuit of the almighty dollar is so shortsighted as to be almost laughable if it weren't the cause of deaths, ruined lands, streams, air pollution, lost bio-diversity and so much more. You didn't think the giving of computers and PR spin is going to make us forget what your company did with PCBs are You? We remember what you have done in the past and the history of your lack of concern only makes us more aware of how little, how late your company acted. What proof is there that your policies have changed? Farmers killing themselves in despair in India, lawsuits forcing small farmers to their knees to settle with your corporate lawyers, dairy farms harassed out of their freedom of speech? What a great American you are. I, like so many others, not only boycott everything I find to be from you and your company, but I am working very hard making sure that the historical records of your actions are preserved and available to anyone who wishes to read and be aware. I think you will not be able to control the Internet, nor the thinking common man. I want you to cease force-feeding untested and unlabeled genetically engineered seeds on consumers worldwide. I want you to stop using taxpayers’ money to subsidize genetically engineered crops- cotton, soybeans, corn, and canola. I want you to not proceed further with your move into GM fruits, nuts and Veggies. I want you to withdraw your suits and stop harassment policy of intimidating farmers who do not march to your drummer. Dairy, canola, corn and more. Butt out. Let humans throughout the world develop their own variations of crops, and not make it illegal for them to save and use their own seed like you are attempting to do in the middle east and elsewhere. Guest guest
Good morning (PST), I sent a letter too, but I didn't have time to go into such detail. I did however make the point that they've gotten the power and profits they now have because we let them when we didn't know any better. Now that we do, we'll spend our money elsewhere. The best thing you can do to stop Monsanto is make them unprofitable by getting your food from businesses that do business for the common good (and not just selfish profits). The second best thing is to write your political representatives to let them know you don't want any of our tax money supporting them either.
