Guest guest
Hello - IS the dried fruit (i.e., organic mangos, apples, etc) found at PCC & Whole Foods acceptable for raw eating? I have heard mixed stories on commercially dried fruit - i.e. 160 degrees?!?! Please advise - thanks in advance!! Joy
Guest guest
Hi Joy, I haven't found much on this question. Here is what this web site has to say www.livingtreecommunity.com/store2/faqs.asp At what temperature is your fruit dried? Figs are sundried, refrigerated and then put in a warm water bath at 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Kiwis are dried at 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Bananas, mango, and pineapple are each dried at 120 degrees Fahrenheit for 24 hours. Cherries, apricots, plums, apples, and pears are dried at 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Peaches and tomatoes are sundried. Prunes are dried at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for 18 hours. For pitting, the dried prunes are dehydrated to 25% moisture with steam at 220 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes. Nothing is added. Macadamias are dried at 100 degrees Fahrenheit (to 1.5% moisture) Even if the information is on the label on the package you buy (which technically they can be held accountable for) in practice food isn't labeled very accurately, and there is little accountability for discrepancies. If the label says nothing, then it can vary from batch to batch depending on all kinds of things, usually the convenience of the processor. What I have bought from the web site above doesn't have a consistent quality, and I don't think they update the web site very often, so the food you buy might, or might not, have been dried at those temperatures. I've been wondering about all this, and had a draft of an email that I will finish and send. May your day be filled with clarity, grace, progress, and warm laughter, Roger - " Joy King " <joy " Z Raw Seattle " <RawSeattle > Thursday, March 24, 2005 8:06 PM [RawSeattle] Dried Fruit at Stores > > Hello - > > IS the dried fruit (i.e., organic mangos, apples, etc) found at PCC & Whole > Foods acceptable for raw eating?
