Guest guest
Hello - I am considering switching to a raw eating regimen, but have a major problem with the recipe ingredients I've seen listed so far. SO many recipes list walnuts, cashews, almonds and other tree nuts as primary ingredients. However, I am deathly allergic, as in anaphylactic shock, to ALL tree nuts in any form!! (And have been since I was 6 or 7 - I'm now 53) Has anyone run into this before? And if so, what kind of substitutions did you make? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Guest guest
You could substitute seeds, such as pumpkin, sunflower, flax. I don't have any experience with anaphylactic shock, but I'm pretty sure this could be cured eventually if you continue with raw foods and do some cleansing. Guest guest
Hi, Lianna - Yes, the seeds should substitute well, since they are not the same as the tree nuts. I would not rely on curing the nut allergy, and would not take a chance on even trying it. (Sorry, Ron - anaphylactic shock can be deadly, if someone is that severely allergic to something, they shouldn't try it, not at all, not ever.) You should find good support in the raw community in Seattle, be sure to visit the regular potlucks. The dishes are all labeled, so you can tell if something has the tree nuts in it. (Desserts would be a prime suspect...pies usually have some kind of nut/date crust, and cakes often are made from nuts.) Hopefully folks will become aware that there is someone in their midst who has a problem with the nuts, and try to lean toward recipes that do not contain nuts. (I'm living near Vancouver, WA, now, so my attendance at Seattle potlucks has been virtually nil since last summer. But they're good gatherings, and good opportunities to network with like-minded people.) Best wishes on your journey toward rawdom - Sue You could substitute seeds, such as pumpkin, sunflower, flax.
