Guest guest
Is anyone using the white sesame seeds? The milk is so great I hate to give it up but I guess I should know if it is raw or not. Are the white dehulled sesame seeds considered raw and how do they get dehulled? We have been making the best " milkshakes' with white ones. Thanks for any advice. Melody
Guest guest
Hi, Melody! I was wondering myself about the white sesame seeds. I noticed that they don't sprout. I have been making sesame seed milk too, and it's so good. I put frozen organic strawberries and soaked dates into it. Does anybody know about the white sesame seeds? I would appreciate any input. Guest guest
I would assume they are dehulled. That would explain why they dont' sprout I'm just hypothisizing, could be wrong On Fri, Dec 10, 2004 at 09:08:55AM -0800, Eva Humphrey wrote: > > > Hi, Melody! > I was wondering myself about the white sesame seeds. Guest guest
Hulled white sesame seeds won't sprout. Although the seeds may be hulled mechanically, sometimes chemical solvents are used in the hulling process. (See below) Unhulled sesame seeds are easy to sprout; takes only a few days. I sprout them on a regular basis. They're high in calcium and other nutrients. You can make milk from the sprouted seeds. - Janet From http://www.ipmcenters.org/cropprofiles/docs/ussesame.html " De-hulled seed " is produced by a wet/chemical process to remove hulls. The hulls surrounding the seed are removed in a wet process using caustic soda (a sodium hydroxide solution) to loosen and remove hulls from the seed. The decorticated hulls are discarded. The bare seed is then washed and dried to produce a premium confectionary product. These de-hulled seed make up 50% of the U.S. market, for use in speciality baked goods or added as a topping after buns, rolls, or crackers are baked. > - > Melody > rawfood > Thursday, December 09, 2004 7:30 PM > [Raw Food]Questions about Sesame Seeds > > Is anyone using the white sesame seeds? Guest guest
The Sesame milk is such a great comfort food isn't it. I really hope that the hulled ones are ok as I did sprout the unhulled and the milk had a bitter taste and a " sprout " taste. I like just blending the soaked seeds with water and some dates. It makes a great " milkshake " ; add some ground flax seed on top and you have a super breakfast milkshake. I like your idea, Eva of adding the fruit, bet a banana with those strawberries would be good too. Melody Eva Humphrey <waveoflight wrote: Hi, Melody! You might have sprouted them too long. Sesame sprouts will take on a bitter flavor if sprouted longer than a few days. - Janet
