Guest guest
I realize that raw foodism avoids heating due the destruction of vitamins and enzymes in the food, but what about frozen foods? I live in a northern climate, and in the winter fresh fruits and veggies get a bit more expensive. I was wondering if freezing fresh produce and storing it for the winter would be considered appropriate within the scope of raw foodism? If no, why not? Guest guest
Freezing is popular among raw fooders, but the fact is that it is not just the act of heating that kills food. What kills food is the extremes of temperature, whether it is heat or cold. Life can only survive in a narrow range of temperature. Apparently most animals and plants can only survive below 120 degrees F, yet there are animals and plants that can survive in the inferno of the desert at much higher temperatures. In the same way, some animals and plants can survive some very low temperatures, it varies. But there are temperatures below which no life can survive; for example, there is no macroscopic form of life in Antarctica in the winter. Some people claim that you can freeze nuts and they will still germinate, and therefore they believe that frozen food is still " raw " . It may be raw in the sense that it has not been cooked, but it is not " live " , there is very little food that can survive freezing. In fact, take a look at something that has been frozen and then thawed--it is mush. That is because the molecular structure has been destroyed, the food is dead and lifeless, just as if it had been cooked. http://www.share-n-give.com/contents/html/raw_food.html: " We also know that cooking, freezing, radiating or processing kills food, stopping its cellular activity and that once we have taken the life from food, there is nothing we can do that can restore that life. This irreversible change alters amino acids (protein) and minerals, and destroys all enzymes and most vitamins. " I would stick to foods in their natural form--fruits, leafy greens, nuts, edible seeds, uncooked and unfrozen. Zsuzsa
