This is a case of over-analyzing details, and missing the forest for the trees, which is what modern " science " does. What is called science today is an attempt to know better than the body; it is an arrogant, completely materialistic paradigm, treating the body as simply some kind of object to be manipulated. In reality, the body adjusts its heart rate to whatever the body in its infinite wisdom knows is optimal at any given time. While a bit of exercise to take the heart rate higher may be beneficial, that should not be the goal of exercise, or of rest. The only object of the game is to rest fully. I will cover some of the ways to help achieve rest in another post. > It's about balance. Too much rest as well as olympic workouts are > both too extreme. The only balance that matters is the equilibrium within the body, and the infinite wisdom of the body takes care of that. Measurements of heart rate are totally irrelevant. Animals, both human and non- human, have been exercising and resting just fine for millions of years without the interference from modern " science " . And the body should be the only guide as to how much exercise it wants. There is no such thing as too much sleep, that is a fallacy perpetrated by modern science. The medics today observe that when someone sleeps a certain amount, they are peppy, and if they sleep a bit more, they are groggy. So they invent the idea of " oversleeping " . But they are only looking at the effects, not the causes. The body had finished one cycle of healing, and the person felt alert. But the body obviously had more healing to do, so it slept again, and began another cycle, which was then not completed. The healing is absolutely vital and can only be done during sleep, to be continued later. To claim there is such a thing as " oversleeping " is to claim there is such a thing as " overhealing " , clearly preposterous. > One of the fallacies to over concern for the food you eat is that one > actually begins to believe that they are in fact the body. Actually, the concern over the food one eats is a manifestation of increasing respect and regard for the body, for Nature, for life, for spirit, the whole gestalt. Modern " science " and philosophy is existentialist, denying any plane other than the physical, and equates the brain with the mind. And people consequently don't have much real regard for their bodies, nor their very lives, nor therefore for the lives of other life forms. However, as one begins to respect one's own body, and become more attuned, one becomes more aware of the life force, not only in one's own self, but in other beings of all kinds. This is the birth of compassion, which is the essence of love. The principle of non-violence, ahimsa, literally means, the life force in me salutes the life force in you. A reverence for life is the very basis of love. To live life is why we're here, to experience and to understand. The continuation of the life force in its expression in the body is the goal of existence. The reason for life is life itself, spirit assumes a physical incarnation in order to experience a physical existence. But spirit becomes enmeshed in the physical plane, loses sight of itself, of everything. Spirit becomes stuck in the karmic wheel of life, and so we keep coming back, incarnation after incarnation. The only way to break this cycle is through mastery. That is what the yogis attempt to achieve, and some are reported to have done so—mastery through purification of body, mind, spirit, and oneness with Nature and with all of life, by means of non-violence, a purer diet, contemplation, reverence. But mastery involves a regaining of knowledge and power. Mastery means literally that, mastery over one's body and life. One can only exit this plane in knowledge and power, there is no other way, just as one came into it in knowledge and power. We are stuck here, destined to be born and die, over and over, until we get it right, until we achieve mastery. Mastery over life means mastery over death. If there was a historical Christos--and I don't believe there was but it doesn't matter, the lesson is the same—then what was demonstrated in the ultimate act of his earthly incarnation was that he couldn't be killed, that he was master over death, and therefore master over life, and that is what we too must achieve. The solid body is made up of energy, the tiniest of physical particles are nevertheless made up of energy, energy which is frozen and unyielding. But with understanding and awareness, it is our job to unlock the mystery for ourselves, to master matter and energy, to be able to convert matter to energy and back again at will. That is what the Christos was said to have done, and that is what the legendary Babaji is known for, as well as were all the famous avatars/yogis/teachers. We need to be able to not die, but to be able to convert our solid form into energy, and we can take the energy with us, destroy it or create it, at will. That is the only way to exit this plane. When we die, we begin our amnesia-induced journey all over again in the next incarnation, and we live our brief lives which end in weakness and defeat of our bodies, and therefore of our spirits. The goal of life is to continue to live, to not die, but to gain mastery, in order to change form at will, and incarnate or not, as one chooses. Physical immortality is essential to mastery. There are some very interesting explanations for how life, and Nature, as we know it today, came to be on this planet. And it seems that Nature was re-designed several times, as evidenced by catastrophic upheavals, as well as sudden appearances and disappearances of various life forms. Additionally, there are reports of there being a gene which limits the life span of the life forms on the planet, so it is possible that death is pre-programmed. However, programming can and should be changed, beginning with our limited thinking. There is nothing positive about dying, there is nothing to be gained from a deathist mentality. Death is unnecessary, the supremely painful destruction of life. Life is sacred, life is all we have, the life of any living being is sacred, whether human animal, non- human animal, insect, plant, microorganism, all living beings are inhabited by spirit, all are equally sacred. The preservation of the life that is in all creatures is primary. From there we have unlimited time to explore and gain triumph over death, and mastery over life, to be able depart the physical plane in a blaze of glory, in wholeness with the body, with eternal freedom to be or not to be.
