Guest guest
I have just recently joined this list, and am enjoying reading the archives. I practiced a vegan lifestyle for 19 years, growing most of the food eaten organically. I fit into the sector needing consistent hydration, and considering the special nutrition needs of one who also has dry skin and low blood pressure. I thought I had a pretty good handle on all of it, finally. Then I moved to New Mexico, where the conditions are very arid, and I find I am starting all over again. This leads to my question for any who might have the experience. It would appear that environment can really play a vital role in food planning and methods of meeting the physical body's requirements. I was very nearly turned on my ear when I moved here from the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC. From extreme humidilty to extreme lack of same. The body indicates that it processes food differently, at a slower rate, and needs more foods of a akaline nature. I have looked at the native diets to see what might provide balance in this climate, and their corn/bean/squash/tomato and chile diet can be utilized to some degree. The chilies really help the body with the heat and its effects. I look forward to interesting discussions, and am really joyful to see so many active on this list. I also have the low blood pressure and have major problems with dehydration. I can't say I was very healthy when I lived there but also wasn't eating as well as I do now nor did I know what to eat to help my body. Do you follow ayurvedic prinicples at all in your raw vegan lifestyle? If so I would eat mostly sweet, sour and salty foods and avoid the bitter, astringent and pungent foods as they dehydrate (drying). I know the southwest is popular for their hot spices but you might want to experiment and go slowly with the adaption as your body is not used to handling them. Your body will adapt over time but take it slow. Right now it might be in a bit of shock. I know mine was! Enjoy New Mexico. Sandy
