Hello all you wonderful folks,

I have a question about the gardening issue. When I was a child my home in the

country was on four acres and we had trees and a four tier garden with

everything you could possibly imagine growing there. I was certainly not the

gardener, that was my fathers business, I just loved to watch and pick. I miss

it. I have never tried to garden on my own, and now I live in an apartment with

only a small balcony. Can anyone suggest some easy plants to grow with (very)

limited space, or a book on small gardens. I don't have a lot of time either, I

would just like a few plants that could keep me company :)

Thanks ever so much,

Emily

Hi Emily. I also have a balcony. I grow tomatoes in a large pot, & in that pot I

also put green onions and lettuce around the base of the tomato plant. I have

also grown peas in hanging baskets. In past years, I have done peppers, radish,

herbs. & more. Anything you can grow in a yard can be done in pots. The secret

is to make sure they are well watered as they dry out quicker than a regular

garden. Good luck & wishing you a bountiful harvest.

loved the idea of growing peas in hanging baskets!! I've done cucumbers in

hanging baskets too .. so much fun. I would add to this advice; dont miss

out on the joys of cultivating your own fresh spinach, green onions, basil,

romaine and the more eclectic designer greens from seed. Imagine growing your

own daily fresh salads ( so easy to do ) ... all of which do well in pots,

even small pots, though as Coral said, the secret to balcony gardening is

indeed

in the consistant watering.

I have a friend who is also short on space. Linda, who opted to garden

upright, making a living wall via a metal type shelving units which house all of

her veggie plants. Too, she uses a drip irrigation system ( very inexpensive to

buy at Home Depot and easy to install ).

Now if you simply want " company " as you stated. I myself would invest in a

hardy citrus tree'....., lemon, lime, kumquat, orange, or tangerine, all of

which can be kept potted and groomed to the desired size. They are evergreen

and give fruit abundantly.

happy balcony-gardening, Mandy
