Hi Deb, Our body has a store of digestive enzymes that obviously are used to break down our foods and aid in digestion, absorbtion, assimilation, etc. When we cook our foods, the enzymes in the foods used to help with our digestion are denatured due to heat because they are proteins. Therefore, after eating a lifetime of cooked food, this draws completely on the enzymes your body can produce to digest the cooked food as you are getting no other help from the food itself. You can become depleted. When these stores are depleted, you can have an increased amount of undigested food particles in the gut that can ferment and lead to yeast overgrowth. This is one of the reasons why raw works so well for me. It is very obvious that cooked food and especially any animal protein that I eat quickly overloads my body. It takes all the energy that I have just to get my food digested. This does not happen when I am raw. My body works very efficiently and does not leave me dragging after meals. I got pregnant during a fast and started my raw diet after the fast. I didn't know I was pregnant but had a fabulous month or so completely raw until I had company in town. Being so new to raw, I went off the diet while my company stayed. I know I overloaded my body as morning sickness hit soon after they left. The cravings were bad as well. As long as I stayed raw, I had no sickness, no lack of energy and no cravings. I am still this way but as soon as I put something cooked in my mouth, it starts the cravings for other bad foods almost immediately. I am not sure if it is harder to stay raw while pregnant or not since I haven't been raw without being pregnant yet. I know I am more dependant on the diet to make me feel strong though and I am thankful I was lead to it during this time as it is allowing me to be healthier through my pregnancy! This pregnancy has been a lot easier than my last one. I hope that helps! Sandy
Guest guest
Sandy, You remind me a lot of my own 'journey'... I've been also in search for good health and learned (and keep learning) how to listen to my body's needs. I have a almost-7 months old baby girl, I don't think fasting is good either right now, that you are pregnant... I 'cheated' my veggie-diet in my pregnancy, a little out of lack of imagination (being pregnant really affected my usual 'me'), a little out of fear of not meeting my baby's needs, a little because of my tight budget... It would've not be fair to risk my baby's nutritional needs out of my own stubborness. Best thing to do, I think, it's to forget all fear, and fight ignorance with knowledge and wisdom... although it could be a life-time project, for me... lol What do you mean by 'enzymes-depletion'? blessings, all, Deb
Guest guest
I don't know why all the physical talk in the world doesn't scare me at all. I only eat raw because I'm more comfortable spiritually eating that way.
