cleansing crisis vs. healing crisis

Anne,

You bring up two interesting comments.

First, I have known several individuals who, like you,

went to a clinic to make the transition. None of them

were able to maintain a 100% raw diet for more than

one year after returning home. This is why the

Hippocrates Institute requests that, whenever

possible, two family members attend together. (At

least they used to request this.) This way there would

be support and a greater likelihood of maintaining the

changes. If you have been able to maintain this on

your own for longer than a year without any cleansing

crisis, you have done very well!

Second, there is a general misunderstanding about the

difference between a healing crisis, a cleansing

crisis, and a disease crisis.

A CLEANSING CRISIS occurs when the body is cleansing

faster than the eliminative channels can removed the

waste/toxins. Because the waste/toxins cannot be

removed through normal elimination, it must be either

removed through abnormal elimination or recirculated

through the body. In the latter case, the

waste/toxins are simply 'put back into storage' but

you feel miserable unti it is (usually several days).

This is where enemas are invaluable. They help

eliminate these circulating toxins. In the former

case, you have uncomfortable eliminative symptoms

(diarrhea, vomiting, cold, skin rash, etc). However,

these symptoms should only last a few days (no more

than 5 max) and you should be easily able to carry out

your daily responsibilities.

When the body becomes overloaded with circulating

waste/toxins, you will experience a disease crisis.

It differs from a cleansing crisis in the following

manner:

1. Cleansing Crisis: you are feeling wonderful on

Monday, get sick with some unexpected 'elimination' on

Tuesday. This elimination lasts about 3-4 days but

you are able to carry on your regular chores. In fact,

if you had the chance to go to bed, you would be

'bored to death' and find something to do! When the

'illness' is over, recovery is as rapid as the crisis

began. You have more energy than before!

2. Disease Crisis: You are feeling 'not like yourself'

for several days before getting sick. You want to

bury yourself in bed for the duration of the illness.

It lasts about 7-10 days. The recovery period is

slow.

Cleansing crisis are more apt to occur when someone is

forcing themselves to transition to a healthier diet

before the body has had an opportunity to heal and

rebuild from previous cleansings. When transitions

are gradual with the body leading the way

(problem-free fasts), cleansing occurs but usually

without a crisis.

When the body has reached the degree of health that

will allow all remaining toxins to be SAFELY removed

through the eliminative channels, there will be a

healing crisis. This crisis will last only HOURS and,

after it is over, the body will be CLEAN, HEALED, AND

NUTRIENT HEALTHY. This is the goal. Although Arnold

Ehret was 100% fruitarian when he died in an

accident, he never achieved this level of cleansing.

It took Paul Bragg over 30 years to achieve it. Once

he did, his diet was 75% raw and 25% cooked.

I point to Paul Bragg because many of the earliest

'gurus' were from the late 1800's-early 1900's BEFORE

our food chain was as polluted as it is today. The

food in the days of these 'gurus' were organic and

unsprayed. Therefore, they did not have the levels of

pesticides in their bodies that we have today! Paul

Bragg lived most of his life in the 20th century.

Jack LaLane, a student under Paul Bragg, was still

alive the last I heard. From my perspective, any man

who can swim the channel between Alcatraz Island and

San Francisco in his 70's is healthy (IMHO)!

Well, I did not maintain raw. AS a matter of fact, I fell flat on my

face with cooked. However, I am slowly and surely incorporating raw

back into my diet. Part of the problem is energy. It takes a lot of

time and effort to keep a raw diet going and I am recovering from

chronic fatigue syndrome. Also, I'm not planning on being 100% raw

ever. I'm not disciplined enough, among other things. FOrtunately or

unfortunately I have a strong constitution and was able to abuse

myself terribly until now when I am sick. I've come to a raw diet as

a process of elimination looking for health and healing for cfs.

Ultimately, I believe the body can heal itself given the proper

milieu, and somehow I found raw in the process. Thank goodness. Maybe

since I'm having to backtrack I will have a better chance of going

mostly raw and staying there. -a
