Guest guest
Can anyone explain why you may have a metallic taste in your mouth when you begin to transition to raw food. My friend began her transition to raw and now has a metallic taste in her mouth. She has been on a high percent of raw for 10 days. Thanks Christina
Guest guest
Someone more knowledgable may be able to explain it but I can tell you a large glass of lemon water first thing in the morning and anytime it gets back throughout the day can help. Guest guest
christina, My name is mary. I am new to this group. I am not currently a raw fooder. However, I spent 12 years transitioning to raw food and then was a fruitarian for about 6 months. this was about 8 years ago. When I finally was on the fruitarian diet for about a month, I got the metallic taste you mention. I assumed it was from the middle ear surgery which I had recently had and did not equate it with my diet. I have never heard of anyone else experiencing this taste. The metallic taste lasted a total of 5 months for me. In fact, it got so bad that I lost all taste for even fruit and could only drink organic grape juice for about 2 months! Finally, my appetite returned when the metallic taste ceased. However, it had an undesirable side effect. Because of having had surgery (which impacted my inner ear) and then being unable to eat because of the metallic taste, I lost 40 pounds in those 5 months. By the time I could eat again, I weighed only 90 lbs...way too low for my frame. I looked like a concentration camp victim! Because I had not been concentrating on insuring I maintained lean muscle when transitioning, I lost a great deal of lean muscle at this critical time. Because of all this, I had to go back to a more traditional diet. My body simply would not repond to an all raw diet anymore. I was becoming nutrient starved. I resented this setback but knew it was necessary. (I have a PHD in holisitic nutrition, am a dr of nutritional science, and have degrees in naturopathy, herbology, and iridology.) Then, just when I felt my body had recovered enough to begin transitioning back to a fruitarian diet, I was poisoned by formaldehyde (gassing out of newly installed defective carpeting). The formaldehyde destroyed most of the elasticity in my lungs and many of my air sacs. However, I did learn one very significant piece of information...before the doctors knew what was 'killing me' (formaldehyde), they did an angiogram. It was discovered that not only was my heart healthy but my arteries were SQUEEKY CLEAN! This was in spite of the fact that my cholesterol had jumped from about 150 to about 275 when menopause hit! (This seems to be a family genetic problem. It was why I got all my degrees.) Now I am on supplemental oxygen 24/7 just to stay alive! I have learned some very valuable lessons. One, the transition to an all raw diet is as important as the diet itself. If I attempted an all raw diet at this moment, I would cleanse too rapidly and repoison myself with whatever formaldehyde is stored in my body. The reason I took 12 years to transition before was because so much of our food chain has been contaminated with poisons over the past 50 years. These poisons are stored in the body until they can be SAFELY released. they are usually stored in the fat cells. therefore, too rapid a weight loss causes these poisons to be released into the blood stream. If the eliminative channels are not able to handle such a 'release', these poisons simply circulate and then restore somewhere else, if possible. You will feel lousy while these poisons are circulating in the blood. It is not a good sign if you feel lousy for more than 3 days as this indicates the eliminative channels were unable to remove the poisons. Since you are having a metallic taste, I wonder if it is the result of a cleansing. If it is, you might be cleansing too rapidly. If the taste interferes with your ability to eat, stop the cleansing. The price is very high in loss of lean muscle (lack of eating) and potential tissue damage from recirculating toxic matter. The holistic approach is to consider the entire body...not just the diet. While there is some value to 'waiting it out', this is only true if the body can handle the toxic matter in a period of 72 hours. It is possible to die of auto-intoxication if the toxic matter becomes so great that it displaces oxygen in the body. Now that it has been a year since my open lung surgery and the removal of the offending carpet, I am SLOWLY beginning my transition back to first a NATURAL DIET. My goal is to return to a fruitarian diet. Since I am in my late 50's, I may die before this transition is accomplished. Who cares? I don't! Having learned that the 'best laid plans of men are often foiled', I am no longer fixated on the DESTINATION but the JOURNEY. I am looking for quality of life...not quantity of years. As long as raw food improves the quality of my life, I will continue the transition. When it decreases the quality, I pull back and re-evaluate my strategy. I have spent the past 6 months continuously re-evaluating. When we lived in the deep south for a short time, we discovered that the children in the schools were taught the 'slow is better'. At the time, I resisted this concept. When I was first transitioning to a fruitarian diet, I was more focused on the GOAL than the journey. I was frustrated by all my dietary weaknesses and often cursed myself for being unable to become a raw fooder/fruitarian 'cold turkey'. When I finally was a raw fooder, I pushed myself too fast into fruitariansism. Having reached the goal and then having had to deal with the consequences of having achieved it BEFORE my body was ready,I am now more patient with myself. I also learned that all my efforts could be destroyed by something totally out of my control! I do not regret that I was a fruitarian for those 5 months. However, I did not have the marvelous energy I had been promised by all the books! Nor do I regret all the years that I spent transitioning to such a diet. (I did have remarkable energy while transitioning!) I simply now realize that, in life, we never achieve a goal permanently. We don't have that kind of control over every facet of our lives. I did not understand this when I was younger. I thought I could accomplish anything and overcome every obstacle. Now I know better. Therefore, I now believe that the JOURNEY should be fun, exciting, and FLEXIBLE. This time, my focus will be on my journey...not the destination (fruitarianism). If I reach the destination, it will be because I have found joy in this diet...not because I have to eat this way for health! My guideline is not a book but my body. mary --- chrissybmom <Cht212 wrote: > Can anyone explain why you may have a metallic taste > in your mouth > when you begin to transition to raw food.
