Guest guest
Hi all~ My name is Sandy and I just joined your group today. I was led to the raw diet through a 3 day water/lemon cleanse I did in January. It just felt like the next step in my healing process. I was 100% raw for a few weeks and it was fabulous. Then I had loads of company and being so new to raw I felt helpless at sticking with the raw during my families stay. I now feel that I made a horrible mistake. Soon after they left I found out that I was expecting our second child which was very thrilling. However, I cannot seem to get back to 100% raw. My body is extremely sensitive to cleansing right now and the slightest move in the right direction sends me into a state of incapacitation which is hard as I am also caring for a 2 year old. I am staying focused and am taking it one step at a time and soon I will be back to what I now consider " normal " or rather optimal nutrition. I have done some reading on raw and am continuing to devour every raw book I can find. However, I have a few questions/concerns that I feel only you educated, experienced raw foodists can answer for me. My blender is about to die from all the raw apples and frozen fruits I've been putting into it lately. I was interested in the Vita-mix as it seems it may be the number one or number two choice for raw foodists. I went to a convention this weekend to see it and learn more about it. I was very dissapointed in that it heated up the food so much. Isn't this a concern? Of course they added ice to almost everything. This also went against my raw thinking. I know we are supposed to drink between our meals not with so wouldn't adding ice be doing the same as drinking with our meal, diluting digestive juices, enzymes, etc? Also, I know I read somewhere about eating/drinking things at room temperature instead of cold or hot and how it is more beneficial for us. Drinking something cold now seems foreign to me. It also heated up the nut butters made in the Vita-mix~something you can't add ice too. I know you can put it in the fridge afterwards but doesn't this initial heating process make the fats rancid and break down protein? I would be concerned in putting flax seeds into anything that heats them. I have searched your archives and read the info on the Vita-mix in those emails. I also learned through you about the K-tec Champ. Does this also heat as the Vita-mix does? I know that the power of the machine is probably associated with the heat it produces so you probably can't get one without sacrificing the other, right? Thank you so much for you time and allowing me to learn from you! I am looking forward to being a part of your group. Sandy
Guest guest
Sandy, welcome to our group! I have a VitaMix that I've been using for years and my experience is that it takes quite a while for things to heat up! It is my one and only " blender " and is used daily for smoothies and salad dressings and sometimes soup. Only once in about five years have I left it running long enough to heat the contents to a temperature above what a raw person would want. I recently bought a Vita-Mix for my raw soups, etc., etc. As to heating foods up, my answer would be to not blend it long enough for that to happen. Blend in short spurts. I have never added ice to anything I've blended in the VM. I also know that there have been pro and con discussions on this list about whether the VM is the *best* or not. It fills my needs to my utmost satisfaction and I will never regret my purchase. By the way, I bought a refurbished VM directly from the VM corp (go to their website for this) and it carries the same 7-year warranty as a brand new one, but costs less. The thing about heating up in the VM has to do with the length of time, and the speed, at which you blend the foods. Blend on high for 2 to 4 minutes and the food heats up. VM isn't endorsing raw foods, so it doesn't really CARE about what heat does to foods. What they want to promote is a product that satisfies the needs of their customers whatever they do. I think it's a fine product. Bright Blessings, Christina
