Tonight I went to Whole Foods and bought a Thai Coconut to

make my first coconut milkshake , a rare occasional treat . My

chefs knife got stuck in it and it looked terrible . By the time I got

to the water coming out of it I was lucky to catch most of it . Is

there a device in cooking that maked opening theses quite a bit

easier ? I finally enjoyed the half of glass or so I finally retreived

..I just cant believe all the work it was , three of us it took to get to

it . The taste reminded me having my first one recently at a

favorite raw restaurant in Florida .All you experienced coconut

openers out there , I am asking for your help . People in New

England usually just stare at these strange things in the

supermarket and say , what are you going to do with this ? Then

they add , I always wondered what they were .

Does opening a coconut Have to be so frustrating and difficult ?

I shy away from redipes also calling for coconut for this reason .

I have a young coco a day, I love them. The site youngcoconuts.com

has a nice picture display of how to open them. I use a large knife

and go around at the bottom of the cone shape slicing to the nut.

Twist the knife toward the coco point after each cut so that the nut

is visible a bit. go around a few times. then slide the knife inside

the cut toward the point of the coco. the " hat " of coir should slice

right off. clean the surface up and put the tip of the knife between

two eyes (softer there) and tap it in a bit. twist the knife and the

top pops off. At first I struggled, now it just takes a minute to do.

Worth every bit! Enjoy

Deb.

Ztarf,

It is very easy, can you see those three dark spots? Just one of

them is suitable for this purpose:

You can make even with scissors a little hole in it and then drink a

milk.

After that just throw the coco nut on the ground. It will break

and you can eat it, too.
