Hello,

I find that I am banned from donating blood in the US for life

because I lived in England for five years and they fear I may have

contracted mad cow disease. The way the ban is stated one would

assume that one contracts mad cow disease from breathing the air.

Anyone who spent more than 3 months in the UK is considered at risk

and thus banned - No where is MEAT EATING even mentioned as a risk

factor. The fact that I was a vegan for those five years and for the

ten years before is considered to be of no consequence which is

completely ridiculous. Anyone who spent even one day in the UK is at

far more risk than me if they ate meat during that day. My five

years in the UK were spent doing a Ph D and post-doctoral research in

Neurobiology so I am familar with the underlying mechanism of prior

disease. I wonder how much of the fact that the ban never mentions

eating meat as being the cause of the disease is an attempt to keep

the meat industry happy (and keep those campaign donations flowing).

its caled making a blanket statement

its just easier fer them to ban EVERYONE then make all sorts of exceptions...

Isn't it possible that you ate something that you thought was ok but wasn't? Given that the agent of mad cow is so hard to kill it seems easy to get it and the onset is so long. If we in the US think we're any better off it's only because we are still in the denial stage that Europe already went through. That can only last so long. Eventually the suppression of the truth (which I'm sure includes huge payoffs to individuals in authority by the beef industry and maybe even murder) will end and we will all realize that we have the disease as well. Then who will be donating blood? Why are you so hot to donate your blood anyway?
