This is where we start Earlier this month the Green Party of the United States Steering Committee authorized the start of a regular email update, freely available to Greens and interested others about what is currently going on nationally in the Green Party. Often it was their impression that the grassroots were not well informed about what was happening within the Green Party nationally. Part of this is due to that it's changing so fast. The Green Party has grown significantly in the last 3-4 months, much less the last 3-4 years! Part of this is also due to that because of our grassroots origins and emphasis, our locals and State Parties are often more developed that our national organization. This email update is envisioned as an inexpensive way to distribute information in a non-paper-intensive way. I promised to make it at least bi-weekly, and intend it to be somewhat more frequent, especially as November 5th approaches. However, for this publication to function at its best, I need your help. I do mean to carry some state and local Green material, especially when it's something that may serve as good example material to people in states where the Greens are just getting started, or if its an event that is expected to draw people from multiple states. If you have material that you would like included in this publication please email it to alerts-m I can't promise I'll always include it, but I'll try my best. ========================================================= 1. USGP Opens Washington DC Office The Green Party of the United States announced today (Feb. 20) the opening of its new national office in downtown Washington, DC. The office will represent the party in the national media, oversee national field operations, and work on building coalitions in Washington, D.C. WHAT: New GREEN PARTY National Office WHERE: 1314 18th Street, NW, lower level, Washington, DC 20036 Office numbers: 202-296-7755, 866-41GREEN (toll-free) ========================================================= 2. USGP Steering Cmte meets in Houston Over the weekend of Feb. 9-10, the Steering Committee met in Houston, TX. Friday evening there was a social at the home of Nathalie Paravicini (USGP Secretary) and David Cobb (USGP Counsel) to which gave Harris County Greens an opportunity to meet the Steering Committee. Saturday morning's meeting discussed preparations for July's Mid-term Convention in Philadelphia. Some time was also spent reviewing the USGP Coordinating Committee's continuing progress toward proportional representation. That afternoon was spent looking at fundraising (doing quite well) and our bookkeeping (not as well - a mathematical error was discovered by our bookkeeper that has temporarily put the 2002 budget $14,400 in deficit.) 2001 financial statements can be found at: http://www.greenpartyus.org/committees/fundraising/financials/financia lpage.htm Much of the early part of Sunday dealt with the impending opening of the USGP Washington DC office, the hiring of staff, establishing a personnel committee. That afternoon, future plans for GreenPages, the growing need for more Field Organizers - and the difficulty in finding corresponding amounts of funding. A report from the International Committee indicated that so far there had been no formal response to USGP's narrowly passed Statement on Green Solidarity and about an upcoming Global Greens Congress planned in August in Johannesburg, SA. The Platform Cmte is planning to have a Summary Platform ready for adoption in Philly. Campus Greens is growing, but as a 501-c organization, is wary of being seen as " too tied " to the Green Party. The Presidential Exploratory reported that one side effect of Nader's Democracy Rising tour has had been that it's made other nationally known progressives very reluctant to admit interest in seeking a Presidential Nomination from the Green Party. (This was a summary of the meetings from a non-Steering Committee attendee, and may contain errors and/or omissions. We'll point you towards the actual minutes of the meetings once they are available.) ========================================================= 3. New '1000 for 1000' Fundraising Campaign Planned The new Green Party Fundraising Program has designed to unite small, medium and large donors, by recruiting 1000 people who pledge to donate $1000 each, at the rate they can afford, and in so doing the Green Party will raise our first $1 million. Donors will have the options of making a one-time payment, or 12 monthly payments of $84/month; or they can spread out over two years ($42/month), three years ($28/month) or even four years ($21/month). As an added bonus for people who identify themselves as members of a USGP-affiliated state party - half the money raised will go back to the state party. In the coming weeks we hope to have a fuller explanation of the program from Jack Uhrich, the Green Party fundraising coordinator, as well as occasional progress reports. ========================================================= 4. USGP March on Washington 4-20-2002 Green Party of the United States - March on Washington Mobilization Alert - Washington D.C., April 20, 2002 please forward . . . Call for Thousands of Greens to join the March on Washington Bipartisan Corruption Led to this Crisis, Green Politics Must End It! We have for too long allowed the current crisis to expand and deepen without an effective Green Party response. With each week, every bombing of civilians, every arrest, every deportation, every layoff, every corporate bailout, and every new revelation in the emerging Enron scandal, the demand grows upon us to successfully confront the failed policies of the establishment. Therefore, the Green Party of the United States, as a participant in the 9-11 Emergency National Network (9-11 ENN), calls for all able Greens to participate in the upcoming March on Washington, April 20, 2002. We Greens will make unique and important contributions to the April 20 March on Washington as well as to the long-term movement for democracy in the United States. Chiefly, the Green Party is an effective electoral tool in the movement's toolbox. We are far larger than our partner progressive political parties in the U.S., and we are partners also to Green Party organizations in over ninety countries on six continents. Our participation in the March on Washington will both increase the size of the protest and raise its visibility to millions of people around the world. After the March on Washington, on November 5th, 2002, our party will amplify and channel dissent at the ballot box, as Green candidates run for office on a platform of peace for hundreds of community, state, and congressional offices across the country. United We March As Greens march in the streets of Washington D.C. this April, and wage electoral campaigns next November, we will contribute not only our numbers but also our voices to the protests. Together with the Campus Greens and scores of other national organizations, united we will march for: 1. A U.S. foreign policy based upon social and economic justice, not military and corporate oppression. 2. An end to racial profiling and military recruitment targeting youth of color and working class youth. 3. Government funding for programs to benefit the economic victims of the 9-11 attacks and the recession. 4. An end to the degrading and secret imprisonment of immigrants. 5. Increased funding for non-military-based financial aid for education. 6. Full disclosure of military contracts with universities. These are the united demands of the March on Washington. To these demands we can add a powerful message: Bipartisan corruption led to this crisis, Americans can turn to the Green Party to end it. To borrow a mantra of the Green Party of Texas, we must, " Be seen being Green. Most Greens who will join the March on Washington are members of other movement organizations also participating in the protest; the involvement of Greens in diverse sectors of the movement is a common source of pride and strength. In Washington let us be visible in our unity as well as our diversity. Wherever Greens march on April 20th, whether side-by-side with one another, or with our sisters and brothers in other movement organizations, we must be visible in our common politics. To increase our contributions to the protests and our visibility in Washington D.C., the Green Party of the United States will provide the following: a.. Pre-Printed signs, banners, flags b.. Materials for sign and banner making c.. National website to coordinate Green participation: http://www.gp-us.org/911 d.. Housing and transportation assistance e..
