Blackberries in Red Wine Syrup

2 cups dry red wine

2/3 cup sugar

2 tablespoons orange zest strips

1/2 teaspoon minced orange membrane and pulp

1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns

1 bay leaf

dash freshly grated nutmeg

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

2 cups fresh blackberries

 

In a 2-quart sauucepan, bring the wine, sugar, zest, membrane and pulp,

peppercorns, and bay leaf to a boil. Cook until reduced to 1 1/2 cups, about 5

to 7 minutes. Strain the syrup into a bowl and discard the seasonings. Add the

nutmeg and lemon juice and blend thoroughly.

 

Divide the berries between 2 bowls. Pour half of the syrup over each bowl of

berries.
