Guest guest
Any suggestions? I've found that the cantaloupe develops a moldy spot on the part in contact with the counter top unless I turn it a few times every day (sometimes I forget). The fruits and veggies developed rot spots from bruising when I placed them in a metal basket. I've since lined the basket with a special plastic foam for aeration. I keep on thinking that this special plastic sheet isn't as good as it seems to be because I generally think of plastic as being air-impermeable.The foodstuffs placed directly in a straw basket will rot if they're close to their prime. Is the secret of keeping these items fresh using a lined basket as opposed to a liner on a counter top? Does the basket need to be elevated from the counter top? I don't have a 55 degree F 'cool spot', nor a basement, so that's out of the question. The fridge isn't big enough (it's just 3 years old and 15.3 cu ft, freezer is 9.8 cu ft). We keep the house at 80 degrees F (the utility bill is close to $200). It gets humid in the summer and stays hot from May 'til Oct. (sometimes Sept.) in Dallas, TX. Thanks, Holly
Guest guest
kinda wish i had your problem!! (80 degree days that is - we're having a very strange summer here in southern ontario) anyway, i don't have all the answers (not sure i have any!) but when you talked about rotating your cantaloupe, i thought maybe you could store it in a bowl - that is, if you can find a bowl that it will sit on, with the rim of the bowl holding it 'over' the inside, so that it's not really touching the bottom or sides of the bowl -- sounds kinda silly now that i'm writing it but maybe it's worth a shot ? i find if my fruit is ripe i have to eat it or refridgerate it asap so i'm sorry i can't be more help good luck tara (having visions of round fruits of various sizes decorating cups/mugs/bowls of various sizes, much like easter eggs in egg cups!) cookwie wrote: > > Any suggestions?
