Guest guest
Vitamin B12 Vegetarians, especially those who follow a strict vegan diet, must make sure they get enough vitamin B12. Deficiencies of B12 can cause permanent nerve damage. Technically B12 can only be obtained from an animal source. However, there are several non-animal sources that add B12 as a supplement, such as Grape-Nuts cereal, Red Star Vegetarian Support Formula, and T-6635plus nutritional yeast. It's also added to some brands of soymilk (check the label). Pregnant or nursing mothers and children require more B12 than the rest of us, so it is especially important to insure that an adequate supply is included in their diet. The recommended daily allowance by government and medical sources for adults of vitamin B12 is two micrograms every day, the equivalent of 1-2 teaspoons of vitamin enhanced nutritional yeast. Fortunately the body stores B12, and if you had a meat-eating diet for part of your life, you probably have enough to keep you away from a deficiency! as long as you're careful to keep including some source of B12 in your diet.
