Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has postponed a decision on its controversial proposal that would have undermined protections for endangered manatees.This welcome news came just one day after Florida Governor Charlie Crist sent a letter urging the commission to delay a decision on management of "one of our state's most beloved natural resources." The Commission's proposal could have been disastrous for these gentle sea cows. Please take a moment to thank Governor Crist for standing up for our manatees»Florida is home to the largest concentration of endangered manatees in the U.S. with an estimated population of more than 3,000. But boat strikes and habitat loss remain serious threats to these amazing marine mammals -- in 2006 alone, a record 417 manatees were killed. Worse, significant declines due to loss of warm water winter habitat are also projected for the near future. Despite these terrible losses, the commission had proposed downlisting manatees from "endangered" to "threatened" on the state's imperiled species list -- a proposal that could seriously undermine protections for manatees. But thanks to Governor Crist's leadership -- and all of the supporters at Care2 and our partner Defenders of Wildlife who have taken action to oppose the Commission's proposal -- we anticipate that manatees will remain in the endangered threat category for the time being. This kind of leadership deserves recognition. Please send a message to Governor Crist now and thank him for speaking out for manatees.Defenders of Wildlife will continue to work to improve the criteria used by the Commission to determine whether a species should be protected as "threatened,endangered" or as a "species of special concern" -- work that would benefit manatees and other Florida wildlife.
