All classes will be offered at Garden for the Environment, a half-acre organic demonstration garden in San Francisco at 7th and Lawton street. Since its founding in 1990, the garden has operated as a demonstration site for small-scale urban ecological food production, organic gardening, compost education and low water-use landscaping. • Kids in Gardens: School Gardening Saturday, September 15th | 10AM – 12NOON Come join us for an exploration of gardening on school grounds. In partnership with the San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance, this workshop will focus on gathering tools and ideas that will help you build and integrate a garden into your school, or improve on an already existing outdoor classroom. Participants will go home with a resource packet full of garden activities related to science, math, language arts, and more. Learn about current movements at work in the Bay Area to green our schools and gain some valuable " big picture " knowledge regarding the network that is available to tap into for resources. • Yoga for Gardeners Sunday, September 23RD | 10AM – 12NOON Gardens are beautiful places to practice yoga! As summer yields to the harvest time of Autumn, come celebrate the Autumnal Equinox at GFE and move with us in the Yoga For Gardeners Workshop. Help yourself heal those sore backs, knees and shoulders that often result from repeated bending and squatting in the garden. Participants will learn yoga stretches that compliment gardening postures, help relieve pain and restore balance to the body. This workshop will focus on strengthening the core and back, important for all garden work. All levels of yoga students are invited. Beginners are welcome! A yoga mat is not required, but bring one if you like. This event is $15 and will be held at the Garden for the Environment, on 7th Ave at Lawton Street in San Francisco. • Film Night! Experimental Films about Food and Gardening Sunday, September 23th | 6:30PM – 9:30PM Join Liz Keim, Film Curator at the Exploratorium, and Amy Franceschini, San Francisco based artist and designer, for an evening of experimental films about food and gardening. Bring a blanket (maybe two!) for this enchanting evening, the Autumnal Equinox typically being San Francisco's warmest day of the year. Come early for wine and snacks, films start at 7:30pm. This event is $10 and will be held at the Garden for the Environment, on 7th Ave at Lawton Street in San Francisco. • Preserving The Harvest Saturday, September 29th | 10AM – 12NOON Want to save the taste of summer year round? If your garden is producing more food than you could possibly eat, learn how to preserve your fruits and vegetables for the winter. In this class, we will cover recipes, procedure, and safety for canning and pickling fresh produce. Projects discussed will include jams, pickles, dilly beans, sauerkraut, and/or tomato sauce. Bring a mason jar and lid (preferably a pint-sized jar), if you want to take home some of the creations from the class. This workshop is $15 and will be conducted at the Garden for the Environment, on 7th Ave at Lawton Street, San Francisco.
