Guest guest
speaking of tomatoes there's one plant in our lil garden that is producing the oddest maters i've had they are about the size of ping pong balls...are a creamy/whitish yellow, almost look like they are coated in powder (tho, not, no mildew or anything) and, they taste is...well...barely tomato like...they have an almost melonesque taste. like a muskmelon, sorta...and, the texture is odd as well..almost creamy inside. tasty in a sandwich..... yarrow Sep 12, 2007 11:02 PM Re: Why does REAL GOOD food have to be expensive? We know that inorganic fertilizers kill off the beneficial critters in the soil (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, etc.), so the most important thing to do is to feed these critters, who then make nutrients available to the plants. We feed them with high-quality compost (preferably homemade or made on site), as well as mulch, and occasionally, compost teas.Flavor is another thing that organic growers value. This means growing different varieties, often with shorter (or no) shelf life, and using techniques that improve flavor even at the expense of yields. For instance, at my community garden, last year I grew the same variety of tomato as another gardener. We both used compost, but I watered mine every 2 weeks, and she watered hers every 2-3 days. Mine had an incredibly rich, sweet/tart flavor, but yielded only 2 or 3 daily at the peak of the season. Hers easily yielded ten times that number, but were bland and had an "off" taste. This spring, another gardener mentioned that her snow peas did not taste good. I had just picked some of mine, which were sweet. The only difference we could figure out was that she had fertilized hers (with an organic fertilizer), and I'd used only compost.Having grown my own strawberries, I cannot eat commercial ones (even 99 percent of farmers' market ones) anymore! They're not the same, or even close. I never thought about the universe, it made me feel small Never thought about the problems of this planet at all Global warming, radio-active sites Imperialistic wrongs and animal rights! No! Why think of all the bad things when life is so good? Why help with an 'am' when there's always a 'could'? Let the whales worry about the poisons in the sea Outside of California, it's foreign policy I don't want changes, I have no reactions Your dilemmas are my distractions I never looked around, never second-guessed Then I read some Howard Zinn now I'm always depressed And now I can't sleep from years of apathy All because I read a little Noam Chomsky I'm eating vegetation, 'cause of Fast Food Nation I'm wearing uncomfortable shoes 'cause of globalization I'm watching Michael Moore expose the awful truth I'm listening to Public Enemy and Reagan Youth I see no world peace 'cause of zealous armed forces I eat no breath-mints 'cause they're from de-hoofed horses
