Não sei de onde recebi isso, mas é interessante. GM experiments now represent over one third of all animal research in Britain; unless targeted for replacement, they could send global animal research numbers spiralling further out of control. Britain’s animal experiments are now at a 15 year high at just over 3

million, largely due to year-on-year increases in GM experiments. Replacing GM animal experiments is now a key strategic priority for our charity, with a first wave of projects developing replacements for 'knockout' mice. Read more Ethical science award Our annual award for Outstanding Scientific Contribution to Animal Replacements has been presented to researchers at Aston University (Birmingham) who are using powerful brain scanners to develop replacements for invasive experiments on monkeys, cats and dogs. With increasing global focus on neurological disease research, a massive rise in primate experiments is possible unless replacements are prioritised. Our award places a much-needed spotlight on the scientific as well as ethical advantages of cutting-edge non-animal research. Read more Targeting Multiple Sclerosis Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can be a debilitating disease, affecting around 2.5 million people globally and with currently no cure. Animal experiments on rabbits, monkeys and rodents have been of dubious value, artificially creating a condition that differs markedly from true MS. The Dr Hadwen Trust is funding a unique pilot study at Imperial College, London, to try out a new molecular technique that could replace animal

experiments in MS research. Read more Universities must do more to replace animals Progress in replacing animal experiments is being made in university-based

research, but too slowly, says an article published in the scientific journal BioEssays. The authors, the Dr Hadwen Trust's Dr Gill Langley and professors from academic research, point out that animal experiments conducted by companies have fallen significantly in Britain, but in universities and medical schools they have risen by 52% in the last decade. Life-saving research without animal suffering Spotlight on genetic research - researchers increasingly find that mouse â€~models' of disease don't translate to human illnesses. Our project at the University of York is developing methods to silence genes in human tissues grown in the laboratory, to replace the use of knockout mice. These 'knockout tissues' will be created from adult 'mesenchymal' stem cells from donated bone marrow. Meanwhile our researchers at St Thomas' Hospital (King's College London) and St Mary's Hospital (Manchester University) are using the latest molecular biology tools to silence genes in human womb tissue in the test tube to investigate the causes of premature birth. This is vital work to replace targeted gene disruption in animals like mice which, as well as causing suffering, is time

consuming, inefficient and of limited relevance to human physiology.
