yeah..gonna be a dry one this year...

Dry winter prompts LA fire officials to declare early fire season

Friday, March 16, 2007

(03-16) 01:04 PDT Los Angeles (AP) --

Unseasonably dry weather prompted city fire officials to declare a fire season

two months earlier than usual.

" We have to be very vigilant that we don't become complacent, " said Los Angeles

Fire Department Chief Douglas Barry.

Fire inspectors began Thursday to check out areas in the city that are prone to

catch brush fires.

The 40-member Brush Fire Task Force will inspect some 130,000 homes and

businesses to ensure dry brush and grass have been cleared around them. Anyone

who doesn't comply could face a $600 fine and additional fees if city crews have

to clear excess vegetation.

" What may seem like an inconvenience for some property owners could turn out to

be kindling for the next brush fire, " Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said.

" The constant threat of brush fires is a way of life in Los Angeles, and this

year we're not taking any chances, " he said.

Only about 2.4 inches (6 centimeters) of rain has fallen in downtown Los Angeles

since July 1, and forecasters said it was unlikely there would be any rain in

March. Normal annual rainfall in Los Angeles is 11.43 inches (29 centimeters).

Maybe it's because we are at the bottom of a north facing slope of a valley.

  • 5 months later...

I've got a complaint for whoever is in charge of the weather Is it you Peter (VV)?

I've just heard that the rest of the country has had half-decent weather recently, whereas we have had only one hour's sunshine in the last two weeks!!!! I think this is most unfair. Everyone knows it should be Wales that gets all the rain, not southeast England!

Can you rectify this for the weekend please.

Hi Peter, I feel SO badly for Mr. Ritch. I am surprised that the killer didn't stab the guy he was in the altercation with. Either way, it was a senseless death; I hope the killer rots in jail for the rest of his life.

The Atlantic County prosecutors' office said that Mr Davies from New Jersey, was involved in a disagreement with another man outside Maynard's café in Margate, in which he was struck.

Mr Ritch, they went on, tried to break up the fight and Mr Davies stabbed him once before fleeing the scene and disposing of the knife and other physical evidence. Robert Davies is charged with Mr Ritch's aggravated manslaughter

As well as aggravated manslaughter, Mr Davies has been charged with possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose and tampering with physical evidence. The Atlantic County prosecutor said it was up to the grand jury to determine whether there would be an additional charge of murder.

Hi all and Peter, the guy who stabbed the Wales guy in New JERSEY turned himself in to the Police; I am so glad he is off the streets for now. Just FYI. Gigi
