It pays for cardiac drugs, for clot-dissolving medications, and for costly mechanical techniques that bypass clogged arteries or widen them with balloons, tiny rotating knives, lasers, and stents. All of these approaches carry significant risk of serious complications, including death. And even if they are successful, they provide only temporary relief from the symptoms." #3: "The United States contains just 5 percent of the global population, but every year, physicians in American hospitals perform more than __ percent of all the angioplasties and bypass procedures in the entire world."a) 30% b) 50% c) 70% d) none of the above #4) True or False: "For 4 billion of the world's 5.5 billion people, the nutrition program I recommend is standard fare, and heart disease and many other chronic ailments are almost unknown." There are 5 events this month. We're looking for volunteers for all events, and organizers for two. Concerts & Festivals in Golden Gate Park: 9/8 Power to the Peaceful and 9/23 Now and Zen. In an ironic twist - there are two upcoming SF events raising funds to "cure" diseases caused by diet, the Heart Walk (Heart Disease) on 9/21 at Justin Herman Plaza and Race for the Cure (Breast Cancer) at the Embarcadero The real truth: These diseases are caused by the 'food' choices individuals make, and that billions of non-humans animals also suffer and die in the factory farms, slaughterhouses and research labs. Will you help us get the v-word out for the real solution to these dietary ailments? LEADERS are especially needed for the 2 walks (primarily being an onsite coordinator and providing extra leaflets, which BAVeg can help you procure). At least three times a day, people are making choices about what (or who!) to eat. Let's give them the information they need to make healthy and compassionate choices. Organizing is easier than you think, and truly, life-saving work -- for both humans and non-humans. You can also join the TEAM-BAVEG email list to receive more volunteer notices. New Monthly Events BAVeg is entirely dependent upon our plant-powered volunteers who make everything happen. In our book, they're truly VIPs - Veggie Important People! Let's give a warm 'welcome back' to Bob who is leading an effort for a monthly dinner at Central Vegetarian in Alameda. Back in BAVeg's formative years, Bob started our first monthly dinner at New World Vegetarian Restaurant, which inspired several others to host monthly dinners in their communities and was instrumental to creating the vibrant social scene that we now enjoy today. As with any new event, your support is critical to its success. Please mark your calendar for the 3rd Sunday, with the next dinner being 9/16. In the South Bay, let's give a big welcome to Sharon, who will be hosting a new monthly dinner at Fragrance Land in Cupertino starting in September. Please mark your calendars for 9/27 and join her to share good food & conversations. This will bring the number of monthly dinners to three in the South Bay. In San Francisco, we're looking for a dynamic volunteer to host a monthly dinner activity and to co-host an existing lunch activity. Dining events are the most fun to organize, and take minimal time. Monthly commitment would average 3-5 hours per month, and that includes the time spent eating. So, if you enjoy eating vegan foods, are friendly, organized, can respond to emails, and have a favorite veg restaurant you'd like to support, then please email us, we're waiting to hear from you! Food for Thought: Peaceable Kingdom The Food for Thought Book Club meets bi-monthly to read fibrous books on veg and animal rights topics. Everyone is welcome to join us (both veg & non-veg), and we especially encourage aspiring and new veg*ns to join us. We are a supportive, low-key, and friendly group. In consideration of others, including our animal friends, all food and drink consumed during book discussions (and at all BAVeg events) are vegan. The next discussion is Peaceable Kingdom in Sunnyvale on Sept 9th followed by Committed: A Rabble-Rouser's Memoir in November. About Peaceable Kingdom: "Animal pain and stress, once controversial, are now acknowledged by legislation in many countries, but there is no formal recognition of animals' ability to feel pleasure. Pleasurable Kingdom is the first book for lay-readers to present new evidence that animals — like humans — enjoy themselves. It debunks the popular perception that life for most is a continuous, grim struggle for survival and the avoidance of pain. Instead it suggests that creatures from birds to baboons feel good thanks to play, sex, touch, food, anticipation, comfort, aesthetics, and more. Combining rigorous evidence, elegant argument and amusing anecdotes, leading animal behavior researcher Jonathan Balcombe proposes that the possibility of positive feelings in creatures other than humans has important ethical ramifications for both science and society." To learn more about this book, and the upcoming event, please see the event calendar Vegan Food Party = Very Fun Party Sand-n-Surf VFP: Thanks to everyone who joined us. We all had a super fun time, beautiful weather -- sunny, warm, and beautiful clean sandy beach with fresh ocean breezes. We had over 50 individuals in attendance, of both the two-legged and four-legged variety. Photos are online in the BAVeg Gallery. Our next Vegan Food Party is an Alum Rock Park Labor Day Picnic and Hike in the South Bay, hosted by Mary, on Sept 3rd. Everyone is welcome, and there is also a playground for children available. Go Native VFP: Whether you love looking at plants, or you love eating edible plants, this is the VFP for you! On Sept 22nd, Anne and Reeba will be a VFP in their native plant garden in Pacifica from noon to 4 pm. And, as with all of our events, everyone is welcome, both veg & non-veg. Ultimate Guide Updates For the third month in a row, the East Bay gets another new vegetarian restaurant with the launch of The Breakroom Cafe in Oakland.
