Echinacea can prevent a cold

I think the timing and modality are important. I've had almost no

colds since I started eating from my garden, but I found echinacea

was most effective when taken at the very first hint of a symptom,

and I think tinctures are far more effective than dried-plant

preparations. I grow echinacea, so I occasionally eat a leaf, though

it's a bit hairy and has a sort of medicinal quality (the sign of

good quality echinacea is some numbing of the tongue).

 

Calendula is also supposed to stimulate the immune system, but I have

grown it mostly for the flowers.

I have read that timing is important too. On occasion it seems to have

stopped a cold in its tracks, but on another had no effect, maybe

because I started it late.

University of Cardiff eh? I believe that it helps shorten the life of a cold and will take it if I feel one coming on. However, I have found that it only works if I take it for no longer than a week. I think the bidy gets used to it slowly and its effects become less pronounced.
