Guest guest
Food for Thought "Free the Animals" is the next selection for the Food for Thought Book Club (FFTBC). FFTBC meets bi-monthly at locations throughout the Bay Area to share vegan food and discussions on the topics of vegetarianism & animal rights. Our next meeting is Sunday, July 1st, over a vegan buffet lunch at Manzanita, an organic macrobiotic restaurant in Emeryville. By PETA co-founder and President Ingrid Newkirk, Free the Animals tells the story of how Valerie, a law-abiding citizen, would become the founder of the American ALF and play a strategic role in the development of the animal rights movement in the United States. Early ALF raids involving the Silver Spring Monkeys, the University of Pennsylvania Head Injury Clinic, and the City of Hope laboratory are fictionalized in this suspenseful story of how, and why, the Animal Liberation Front started in the United States. To RSVP or for more details, please see event calendar For more information on the FFTBC, please join its dedicated mailing list by sending a blank email to fftbc- Upcoming book selections include: Pleasurable Kingdom (Sunnyvale) and Committed: A Rabble-Rouser's Memoir (SF). Planting the Seeds of Compassion How are new veg*ns created? They're born veg, or become veg, potentially sparked by information given to them by activists who leaflet around the world. Consider this: To birth a child involes a gestation period of 9 months and an estimated $250K to raise that child through age 17. Whereas, leafleting for an hour and distributing 300 leaflets can potentially create 5-10 new vegetarians! So let's have an orgy of outreach this summer! Upcoming opportunities include: 6/23 & 6/24 Pride - This is our 5th year at this landmark San Francisco event, the largest Pride celebration in the nation, with a million people attending over two days. Last year, through leafleting alone, we distributed over 3,000 pieces of information. This year, through tabling and leafleting, we will again distribute veg info to plant the seeds of compassion & good health to the crowd of open-minded and progressive people who attend from all parts of the world, from Albany to Arizona to Australia. 6/17 Stern Grove - Happening every Sunday starting June 17th through August, this free series of music concerts is a perfect opportunity to leaflet. Join us for the inaugural event; we will be leafleting then relaxing to enjoy the concert with Huey Lewis & the News. 7/1 Warped Tour - This music concert tours the country and is a proven wonderful opportunity to leaflet teens. In other cities, leafleting teams report distributing over 20,000 leaflets in one day. Carpooling and leaflets provided. The best times will be from 3:30 until 7 pm, but if you can only go earlier (or have the stamina to start earlier!) it is definitely not a wasted effort. Party Vegan! Vegan Food Parties are designed for individuals who enjoy vegan food to gather together to share food and fellowship. This is a perfect opportunity to try a wide variety of foods and to get recipes for dishes that you liked. In fact, we encourage you to 'animal test' new vegan recipes on hungry volunteers. Please join us at our annual 4th of July Independence Day celebration of vegan food at beautiful Montara State Beach. Volunteers are needed to help us set-up. Summer & fall are perfect opportunities to host an outdoor VFP. So if you'd like to see a VFP near you, let us know! Ask Cat: Objecting to Animal Testing For Advice, vegan-style, Ask Cat! Q: When I say I'm against animal testing, I sometimes get some very vehement responses from people saying if abolishing animal testing means those tests are going to be carried out on people, then they're for keeping the animal testing ... I don't have a ready comeback ... J., San Francisco We're fortunate to have Dr. Alka Chandna answer this question. Alka, formerly a Bay Area activist, is now a senior researcher with PETA, focusing on animal experimentation issues. She worked on PETA's campaign against primate experiments at Columbia University and wrote the complaint against contract testing lab, Covance. Read Alka's answer here News Bites Live Long, Live Strong Andrew Z, an active BAVeg volunteer and member of the LGBT community, has written and designed the Live Strong and Long website for the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. Says Andrew, "For some time, I've felt that there's a special need for information about vegetarianism in the gay community. I have friends with HIV who have experienced improved health on a vegetarian diet, and was able to confirm this with a reputable doctor, and so I feel it's very important to get this information out to the community to enhance their treatment options." Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary Please join Bay Area Vegetarians at the monthly work parties for Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary in Stockton. Volunteer activities include cleaning out the barns, grooming rabbits, chopping the pastures, and other old-fashioned fun activities -- important work for the health and well-being of the critters that live at Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary. Work days begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. and typically occur on the 2nd Saturday of the month.
