Guest guest
LONDON An advertisement for the Toyota Prius that exaggerated the car’s environmentally friendly credentials has been withdrawn by the manufacturers. The commercial claimed that the car, which is exempt from the congestion charge in London, emitted up to one tonne of CO2 less than an equivalent family car run on diesel. The Advertising Standards Authority found that the claim was false when comparing the 1.5-litre Prius with any other car with a similar-sized engine, and with half of those using a 1.8-litre engine. The authority ruled that Toyota was guilty of misleading advertising and that the advertisement must not be repeated. Last month Toyota was banned from repeating an advertisement for its Lexus RX400h because it implied that the car caused little harm to the environment.
