I dont know about the rest of you but I feel that this discussion on every minutia and disputing the defenition of veganism has worn itself out. My last words on the subject comes from the uk vegan society : Q: What is a vegan? A: A vegan is someone seeking a lifestyle free from animal products for the benefit of people, animals and the environment. A vegan therefore eats a plant-based diet free from all animal products, including milk, eggs and honey. Most vegans do not wear leather, wool or silk.

Q: How did the word vegan come about? A: The word vegan is made up from the beginning and end of the word vegetarian and was coined in the UK in 1944 when the Vegan Society was founded. The derivation of the word symbolises that veganism is at the root of vegetarianism and the logical conclusion of the vegetarian journey in pursuit of good health without the suffering or death of any animal. Bees are manipulated worldwide to produce many products for human use: honey, beeswax, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly and venom. They are intelligent insects with a complex communication system. Because bees are seen flying free, they are also often considered free of the usual cruelties of the animal farming industry. However bees undergo treatments similar to those endured

by other farmed animals. They go through routine examination and handling, artificial feeding regimes, drug and pesticide treatment, genetic manipulation, artificial insemination, transportation (by air, rail and road) and slaughter. Queen for a Year or Two Queen bees are artificially inseminated with sperm obtained from decapitated bees. Queens are systematically slaughtered every two years because over time their egg producing abilities decline so their whole hive becomes unproductive and uneconomic. In Israel they are killed and re-queened every year. Bees Crushed When beekeepers manipulate combs many bees are crushed and killed. Hives have smoke puffed into them to calm bees down and make them easier to handle. Special excluders or devices that violate the bees' space are attached to hives to collect bee products from bees as they enter hives. Bees are separated from their hives by being shaken vigorously or jetted out with

powerful streams of air. They may have their legs and wings clipped off. Clipping the wings of queen bees prevents them from swarming (flying off!). Wool is not taken from sheep that live a gentle existence on a lush grassy knoll. Sheep are raised for financial gain, and this comes from meat as well as wool. It is a misconception that wool is simply a by-product of the meat industry and that one might even be providing a service by 'using it up' – like leather, wool provides extra income to perpetuate animal suffering. The world’s sheep population now stands at more than 1 billion.[ii] They suffer from a variety of welfare problems, ranging from maggot infestations to mastitis and foot rot. They are

extremely vulnerable to neglect whilst also being forced to endure a range of human interferences, from tail-docking and castration to dipping and spraying.Peter H
