Guest guest
One from Boston: Not all the offerings at Hippie Chick Bakery are vegan, but on any given day, about a fifth of them are. Owner Amy Mastronardi doesn't make a practice of advertising her vegan goods because she doesn't think people will buy as much. Fudgy vegan brownies ($1 each) can stand their ground against the regular versions, as can vanilla or chocolate cupcakes ($1.50). The baker got her start in high school at a local farm stand, where she worked making muffins and cookies. Since opening in 2002, she has crafted vegan wedding cakes and gluten-free birthday cakes. This is a family venture. The cook's husband, Carl Neunaber, is co-owner and their son, C.J., is a dedicated taste-tester. "He's got weird tastes for a 5-year-old," Mastronardi admits. His favorites are the corn muffins ($1.45), apple turnovers ($1.45), and croissants ($1.79).
