It's wonderful to see Spring is just around the corner.

For our regular readers, you may have noticed this issue is out a few days later than normal; we've been incredibly busy. We tried to do a short newsletter so we could get it out quicker, but, happily, there is just so much energy and activities for veg*nism within Bay Area Vegetarians, that it really isn't possible to just have a short newsletter.

Through this year, we will be looking to expand BAVeg's core team. We're looking for people who are passionate about veganism, and willing to walk their talk and be active. So, if you're dedicated to promoting veganism, come talk to us. We can always use good volunteers.

Volunteers make everything happen for Bay Area Vegetarians. Be a part of that!

Great American Meatout

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In support of the March 20th Great American Meat-Out, which organizers describe as "the world's largest and oldest annual grassroots diet education campaign", we want to mobilize 100 volunteers to hit the streets in the Bay area to to promote the benefits of a compassionate and cruelty-free lifestyle.

If you'd like to organize an activity in your local area, please let us know!

And, remember, the monthly letter writing parties (in Berkeley and SF) are also great ways to help animals, as well as protesting cruelty at KFC (Palo Alto, San Jose, and SF events monthly)

So, stand up and be counted, for the animals, the earth, & our combined health & well-being.

 

 

 

 

 

Animal Place Tour and Vegan Food Party

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Animal Place is a sanctuary and education center nestled in Vacaville. Dozens of rescued farm animals and dogs from Mexico are lucky to call Animal Place "home".

On April 7th, Bay Area Vegetarians invites you to join us for an exclusive tour of Animal Place followed by a Vegan Food Party picnic. Last year's tour was nearly full by time it was announced in the newsletter. So, this year, it is being announced first in the newsletter before it is announced anywhere else!

Cost for the tour is only $10 per person, and we hope you'll stay for the Vegan Food Party picnic afterwards; just bring a vegan dish to share. All proceeds benefit Animal Place, which has many other farm tours and other special events happening this spring, summer, and fall.

Book Club Updates (including NEW club!)

Our first book club is reading fiction, and is currently full (they do have a wait list). The second book club, reading veg/AR topics, is open for new members.

Bobby is looking for interested folks to start a new book club reading primarily fiction, but potentially non-fiction as well. Please see news post below for details, and to contact Bobby.

Upcoming Veg/AR book club selections are The China Study by T. Colin Campbell in May and Free the Animals: The Story of the Animal Liberation Front by Ingrid Newkirk in July. Please see news blog for more information.

 

Volunteers Wanted for Earth Day tabling

Berkeley Earth Day - 4/21Emeryville Earth Day - 4/28

We have been invited to return to table at the Emeryville and Berkeley Earth Day events. Volunteers are needed to organize and staff the information tables. These are both fun events, and great way to reach environmentally-minded people who haven't yet made the connection between what they eat and what they are doing to the environment and the animals.

Emeryville Earth Day is a low-key neighborhood event, and last year had great live music for most of the day. Lots of families with young kids. Berkeley Earth Day is a larger community event. While Berkeley is very progressive, there are still non-veg people that need the veg message. Tammy can help with supplying everything needed. Just email us!

Vegan Outreach fun(d)raiser

Ari & Becky hosted a Vegan Food Party in February, and we invited Jack Norris, co-founder of Vegan Outreach, to speak on veganism. At the end of the event, Ari made a generous offer to match all donations made to Vegan Outreach through the end of the month. That announcement was posted to the SFBAVEG list as well as our website. Thank you to Ari & Becky and to all who participated; $1,055 was raised and has been sent to Vegan Outreach.

What does this mean? Ari states it best. "I calculate we saved over 30,000 animals in just the next year from this donation (if each guide costs 10 cents, 1.5% of people who get it adopt a veg diet and the avg person eats 95 animals/yr)."

Bay Area Vegetarians College Team

Bay Area Vegetarians has a team in the Adopt a College program. As a team, we've distributed nearly 3000 leaflets this semester at Bay Area campuses!

If you'd like to join our team, it's very easy to do: just pick a school, get some leaflets, and go! After you've leafleted, just report your totals. Visit the Adopt a College page for details, and email Tammy if you need any more information.

 

Free Veggie Burger at Johnny Rockets

Take your burger loving friends (especially the non-veg ones!) to a Johnny Rockets near you. The Streamliner is their specialty burger made with vegan Boca burgers. See PETA's website for full details.

February Outreach Really Adds Up: BAVeg volunteers went "Back to School" to share life-changing information with college students. When we did the math, we were astounded to see how it all added up. See for yourself!

Two vegan restaurants close in SF: unexpectedly Medicine New-Shojin Eatstation in the Crocker Galleria has closed, and will reopen with a new name and (sadly) no longer as a vegetarian restaurant. Parawdise, a raw restaurant kinda near Union Square, has had a lingering open/not-open routine, but it appears to have finally closed this time since its telephone number has been disconnected.

For Marin folks, Cafe Gratitude in San Rafael has opened and is serving raw delights. It now carries the title as the "only veg restaurant in Marin" with the closure of Lydia's Lovin' Foods in Fairfax.
