"Iraq possesses huge reserves of oil and gas—reserves I'd love Chevron to have access to." -- Chevron's CEO Kenneth Derr, 1998Dear friend of Global Exchange,Are U.S. Oil Companies going to "Win" the Iraq War? HELL NO!On Monday, the Bush administration and U.S. oil companies came one step closer to "winning" the war in Iraq when the Iraqi Cabinet passed a new national oil law.The brainchild of the Bush administration and its corporate allies, the law is the smoking gun exposing Bush's war for oil.It would transform Iraq's oil system from a nationalized model all-but-closed to U.S. oil companies, to a commercialized model, all-but-fully privatized and opened to U.S. corporate control. The law now goes to the Iraqi Parliament for consideration in early March.

See ideas below or go to the United for Peace and Justice website. It's simple: the Bush administration and Big Oil are trying to get the best deal and the most oil possible out of a war-ravaged and desperate people. They are holding 25 million Iraqis - and 150,000 American troops -- hostage to their oil agenda. There is time, if we shine enough sunlight, to expose the oil agenda driving the war. We can also support Iraqis who believe that now is not the time for their government to rush into contracts that will lock in the fate of their most valuable resource for a generation. Iraq's biggest oil unions are already beginning to mobilize against the new law. Let's do our part!

We can't let Big Oil "win" the Iraq war. Hundreds of communities, throughout the US and the world, will be holding events on March 17-19, to mark the 4-year anniversary of the Iraq war. We urge anti-war activists, environmentalists and climate change activists to organize protests on these dates. Gas stations and headquarters of the oil companies leading the charge in Iraq would be a great targets: Chevron, ExxonMobile, Marathon, ConocoPhillips, Shell and BP. List your protest at www.unitedforpeace.org. (For San Francisco Bay Area activists, there is a Rally, Protest and Nonviolent Direct Action planned at Chevron's World Headquarters on March 19th, 7 - 10 AM in San Ramon. I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed. I feel, at this moment, more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless." Lincoln in a letter to Col. William F. Elkins on November 21, 1864
