January 30, 2007 Can Rev. Billy Save a Vegan Bakery? We received a press release about the closing of yet another establishment in lower Manhattan today. This time it's not a high profile venue like CBGB, but a little vegan bakery on St Marks that is being forced out due to high rent. The League of Humane Voters of New York City (LOHV-NYC) and Rev. Billy are teaming up to save Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen along with Council Member Rosie Mendez and Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh. The bakery, which has been opened

for 16 years, is due to close March 31st. This weekend the above team will be calling on the bakery’s landlord, Friedman Management, to renew their lease and forego their eviction. The bakery owner will be on hand with hot cider and vegan food for everyone. In August, the SuperVegan blog reported that at a Rev. Billy service "the congregation said amen when Peter Silvestri, owner of Whole Earth Bakery, announced that his landlord had just renewed his lease for another seven months." The bakery provides more than just sweets, they also serve lasagna, pizza, smoothies and more (check out a photo gallery here). Get a vegan's perspective on the closing, here. And as another option for vegan sweets, Babycakes is still opened! Save Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen: Saturday, February 3rd // 2:15pm // Tompkins Square ParkPeter H
