Guest guest
A steel firm has been fined £564,000 for failing to abide by new European Union rules on cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The Environment Agency levied the fine on Alphasteel in Newport, because it did not keep a record of how much carbon dioxide it released. The firm created more than 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2005. The agency said it had taken "a firm line" with Alphasteel, after trying to help the firm to follow the rules. Alphasteel was one of four firms out of 500 in England and Wales which failed to measure up during the first year of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The scheme agreed under the international Kyoto Protocol imposes an automatic fine of 40 euros (£27) per tonne if a firm fails to provide allowances equal to its emissions. The largest fine on the three other firms involved was £122,000. Climate change Environment Agency Wales said it had to ensure firms met their ETS targets to combat the global threat of climate change. Director Chris Mills said: "We're really disappointed that it's come to this. "There are over 500 companies in the European Emissions Trading Scheme in England and Wales, and Alphasteel is one of only four that have failed to comply. "This scheme is the most important mechanism for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases which are causing climate change. "We've done everything in our power to help Alphasteel to follow the rules, but it's vitally important that this scheme works properly, so we have to take a firm line."
