Supporter,

PAN Latin America partners in Paraguay seek global solidarity in response to the death of 11-year-old Silvino Talavera from pesticide spraying. The men responsible for Silvino's death have yet to be brought to justice, but Silvino's mother, Petrona Villasboa, continues to press forward, "One has to have strength to struggle. I will struggle to the very end, because I think of the large number of children that live in my community." The case is currently scheduled to expire in December. Your action is needed to help keep the case and court process moving forward.

Take Action now! Your message from North America is needed immediately. Sign this petition that will be sent by fax to the Paraguayan state and justice system.

The StoryEleven year old Silvino Talavera died after being exposed to toxic agricultural chemicals used on Roundup Ready soybeans. Recently, the tragedy continued with the death of 5-month-old Vidal Ocampos, who died because of hydrocephalus, a malformation of the nervous system that can be associated with exposure to toxic pesticides. During the initial court decision in 2004, Hermann Schlender and Alfred Laustenlager were found guilty of homocide. But the decision was later annulled. A second decision in June 2005 convicted them again. Immediately, the convicted parties appealed the two year jail sentence. The presentation of the appeal puts justice at serious risk.Petrona Villasboa, mother of Silvino and grandmother of Vidal, also suffered her brother being murdered in retaliation for their active involvement in this case; Petrona's own life has been threatened. Petrona is regional coordinator of the Nacional Coordinator of Organizations of Rural and Indigenous Women in Paraguay (CONAMURI).

For more information, read Silvino's full story.
