Vegan flag Friday, November 10, 2006 unites pirates TIM LaBARGE / Roger Jones adds a bracelet to Laurie Bradley's outfit At the grand opening party at Pirates Tavern It was only a matter of time before someone opened a vegan pirate-themed restaurant in Portland. I mean, the demand was overwhelming. The city was ready. The people were crying out for an eating establishment that would appeal to their love of thigh-high boots and eye patches while eschewing meat and dairy. Frankly, I'm surprised that someone didn't do it sooner. Pirates Tavern is not a put-on. It's not an April Fools' joke. It's not a performance-art installation. There is, on file somewhere, presumably, a business plan. It's a diner. If you ever drive out on Northwest St. Helens Road you might remember its predecessor, Yankee Pot Roast. The tavern has been decorated in pirate style (though it also is

decorated for Halloween, and it's hard to know which of the many skeletons and skulls are Halloween-related and how many are meant to simulate Davy Jones' Locker). The wait staff wears pirate costumes. The crowd, on opening night, was a mix of twentysomething vegan-types, middle-aged couples and, inevitably, people dressed as pirates. There was flamenco guitar and belly dancers and a bona fide celebrity: the actor who played "Dave" in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III." The vegan menu is large. You can order Salisbury steak or its approximate. You can order a Save-the-Chicken burger. I ordered the "Paris, Texas," which consisted of Yukon Gold french fries and steamed veggies smothered in chili, with salsa and guacamole. I also ordered rum. It came in a shot glass with a Jolly Roger on it. The vegans clapped as the belly dancers shimmied. The pirates posed for pictures. I passed on the vegan cheesecake Were there pirate vegans? Probably not. But if

there had been, you have to admit, they probably would have had a lot less scurvy. 2839 N.W. St. Helens Road; open 5-11:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 5 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Friday-Saturday. Details: www.piratestavern.com -- Chelsea Cain Special to The Oregonian Peter H
