Guest guest
not even slightly vegan related but from the Sf Chronicle from the " overheard on the street " section " I can't talk to you now, I'm trick-or-treating,'' a boy of 11 or so said into his cell phone on John Odell's Noe Valley porch on Halloween night. Other reports from the field: -- Standing in the doorway of a home in San Rafael, an 8-year-old dressed as a 49er said to Kathleen Gaines, " I like your hardwood floors.'' -- " I told you,'' said a mom to her son, overheard by Lisa Geduldig on Cortland Street in Bernal Heights, " you're a gangster, not a pimp.'' -- When a trick-or-treater perhaps still not able to read asked Mark Barrett of San Francisco about her choice of candy, he told her it was a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. " I have recess at school,'' she said. -- Jeanne Brophy says there were 400 to 500 kids on her Mill Valley street. Among them, a boy of 9 or so, to whom she offered a chocolate bar from a basket filled with them. " Is this a natural or un-natural house?'' he asked. " What?'' she said. " Is there any organic candy?'' he asked. As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there's a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged, and it is in such twilight that we must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.
