(CP) - A man who used a piece of glass to try to castrate his female dog because he thought she was a hermaphrodite has pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering. In June, two scars were found on a poodle-cross puppy named Lucy, which was surrendered to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The scars were consistent with surgical incisions made to locate retained testicles. Rueben Kuepfer, 26, of Perth County, Ont., said he thought the dog was a hermaphrodite, so he made the cuts using a sharp piece of glass. The puppy was left to heal without antibiotics, stitches or veterinary care, but has since been adopted. Kuepfer was fined $300, sentenced to 18 months probation and banned from owning a dog or living anywhere a dog is kept. © The Canadian Press, 2006 As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there's a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged, and it is in such twilight that we must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.
